Option to TURN OFF flash effects after a starship explodes
« on: August 12, 2019, 07:02:07 AM »

I do not suffer from epilepsy or anything but I mostly play the game at night and it just pisses me off when everytime a starship gets destroyed my eyes get flashbanged.

Players should be able to turn that effect off, or just minimalize its density.

Hi, welcome to the forum! You've got a couple of options.

First, you can set "enableShipExplosionWhiteout" to false in the settings file found at \starsector-core\data\config\settings.json, which will disable the flash entirely.

Or you can use GraphicsLib, which will tone down the flash quite a bit and generally make the game look better. It has a performance impact of course, but you might be surprised how small it is, and the mod is highly configurable anyway, so you can disable the graphics improvements you don't care about.

I once paused it when the games screen went white by mistake and thought the game or my laptop broke/froze. I almost forcefully shut down the laptop. I think it needs to be nerfed, it is way too overkill for a graphical effect.

Best part is trying to issue orders when a ship recently exploded and being unable to see a damn thing.

Thank you Sundog, very cool!

I don’t mind it to much, the only thing that bothers me is that it carries over to the tactical map. So after I blow something up and I immediately tab to look for next target, oh wait, whiteout....

Yes, that needs to go, and I should not need to go for an archaeological dig to uncover settings.json to do it, and that disables all flash, not just flash on the map screen.

This setting is the sort that should be in in-game settings, not buried treasure.  (I did not need to go into an .ini file to use gamma correction for old FPS shooters.)

I watched Sseth's video again and noticed something about the flashes. On a high-resolution screen the problem with them isn't so big but if you have a low-resolution screen or are zoomed in that is when it becomes over-kill. I suggest that the graphic effect scales down to match the zoom level or screen resolution so that it no longer takes up the whole screen in a flash.

I have a related question, for anyone familiar with GraphicsLib. How do I get the flashes back? I turned off the shader and "enableExplosionEffects" to no avail.
