I think a veteran or seasoned player might be able to tell when they have canceled their AI in control of the ship (if they even play like that) but I as a new play cannot tell when I have done so by mistakenly pressed a button or clicking. I only notice that after a while of inaction. It would be great if there was some graphical indication that the AI is in control and when it is released. (If there is a clear and easy way to tell I haven't noticed it and that isn't good either if that is the case).

This is just a suggestion.
I usually set it to autopilot and follow along. I noticed that at the bottom in the middle of the screen is the fps displayed. I thought maybe a blurred transparent blue or white bar looking like this /```Fps Frame Rate```\ could appear behind the fps counter whenever the AI was in control and then removed when it is no longer in control. It could just be a thin coloured bar on the edge of or around the screen. I don’t I think a glow around the ship would look nice (that is another idea I had).

Anyway, I think it is an issue for new players and I don’t think I am the only one who is getting confused with the tactical map and gameplay nuances.

The only button you can press that does not cancel AI control is R (this will target sn enemy). Everything else (even toggling the tactical map i think) does.

There should be a notification in the bottom left when it happpens

Upper left. And IIRC it also makes a short static sound.

Toggling the tactical map does not disable AI control.
