Combat use of Solar Shielding
« on: May 26, 2019, 09:54:31 AM »

Need some theoretical help.
How 20% bonus from solar shielding affect incoming energy damage? Is it multiply with other defensive bonuses, or directly reduce incoming damage to 80% and then standart 0.36 flux/damage goes?
Just trying to decide is it worth to trade 15 capacitors for the solar shielding vs remnant fleets. :)

If you're getting in regular trouble vs. Autopulses and Plasma Cannons, then yeah it's worth it either way. The better the shields and the bigger your ships, the better the savings. Solar Shielding is perfect on a Paragon where OP's aplenty.

It doesnt apply to shields. Its coating for hull. So it reducing incoming damage to armor and hull.

Are you sure about that? That would be a huge bummer.

It's not, but IIRC it's supposed to, and the phrasing on the hullmod description indicates that it would. Made it apply to energy damage taken by shields as well.

Eah. 5x autopulse remnant battleship make me a bit nervous. Plasma/beam modifications is much easier to deal.  ;D

There is a fair bit of math, but as of right now, it's mostly for the armor tanking. I use it on my Conquest to eek out that extra bit more of defence. Last i knew, it decreased damage first before it did any of the other calculations so it's a raw 20% off energy weapons on armor which can be relatively huge given how armor works.

Isn't it a bit too impactful? Looks like a huge nerf of energy weapons to me. Solar shielding is cheap enough that it was semi-usable even as armor/hull-only damage reduction.

I mean HE is good vs armor, kinetic vs shield, frag is at least good vs hull... And energy would be just bad vs everything?

Ouch, why energy weapons have such poor efficiency? Blasters etc all have 1.5:1 something flux to damage, and about to get even worse with solar shielding changes.

Energy weapon balance is not to be considered in a vacuum, after all the ships they go on is just as much of a balance factor.

Yes, and they are nowhere near OP as is. 20% nerf is unnecessary.

Talk about the worst case! You're making it sound like every ship from now to eternity will get 20% energy damage reduction for free. It's a hullmod with a cost; one with situational use at best, even for the player. And it's only 20%. Advanced Countermeasures level 1. Yeah I'm comparing a hullmod to a skill. 8)

If it was between this mod and, say, Hardened Shields or Heavy Armor, I would still rate it third. If Solar Shielding does not work for shields but only armor/hull, it's an absolute dog.
