Ex-Escape Velocity addict looking for a fix
« on: June 04, 2011, 04:57:05 PM »

Hey. I started playing video games on a Macintosh LC beige pizza box when I was about 8, with Maelstrom, and later Escape Velocity. Since then, I've followed the EV series religiously, doing some plugin development, and enjoying each new Escape Velocity game, until they stopped with Nova.

Now I'm in a digital arts college looking to create my own stuff and get involved with new projects, so when I saw this game being developed, I pre-ordered it within 5 minutes of being told about it. I cannot wait to see what's done with this game, and I hope to enjoy it just as much as I adored the old Escape Velocity games.

Here's hoping for a plugins/mod interface to put the frosting on the cake.

I've played EV Nova & NAEV (pre 0.5.0b1 it was more like the actual EV games, its now becoming closer to Transcendence, which I also play & mod for (and developing stuff for Naev as well, nolonger all in caps since v0.5.0b1))

Thanks for reminding me about NAEV, I hadn't looked at it in awhile. I had a lot of fun with EV Nova (PC version), always hoped they'd do an update of it.

Edit: NAEV 0.5 is pretty amazing. They've really improved it since the last time I played (0.42 or something), the interface is a lot better than I remember it, and it's certainly fun.

Hi hamster :p

From what I have seen, the planned "campaign layer" is going to be very much like escale velocity, where you can travel to different systems doing missions, upgrading your ship, etc. only now you will be able to create a whole fleet, and also create stations on planets and other such things.

I am super excited.

Why has a developer ever needed any reason other than "it looks bloody awesome"?

I do 3D modeling and map creation for an open source fps called xonotic

From what I've heard, there will be a distinction between the strategic and tactical areas. You move about in the sector M&B like, and when you encounter an enemy fleet, you switch to the tactical level as seen in the skirmishes.

The battle station is not completely operational, shall we say.

"Now witness the firepower of this thoroughly buggy and unoperational batt... Oh, hell, you know what? Just ignore the battle station, okay?"

I bought this immediately upon seeing the current gameplay and goals list. I spent my childhood approximately the same way (Mac gamers have like 4 possible games to nostalgically remember) and I've wanted an EVN sequel since EVN, and this looks to be a much cooler game than I'd hoped for.

A worthy EVN successor if you ask me. Also, EVN still has an active community, sure as hell did not expect that.
