An fleet admiral can promote a person to the rank of  admiral, but not fleet admiral, that's for the someone else, higher up. But he took a tritach battlegroup for me so...... ;D

the only thing i can imagine went down in that battle would be the most amazing kiting anyone has ever seen. just making the AI give up because it knows it can't win.

When you can't go on, just accept your doom. It comes to all, it is inevitable.

Also I totally had the name BEFORE the cruiser.

Just for the sake of it, here's how amazing he was at kiting :D
Shuttle vs 1 x paragon
           2 x Odyssey
            1 x astral
            6 x wasp drone wing
            4 x dagger bomber wing
             3 x xyphos wing

And he won them all (fully crewed) and border the paragon and astral for me :D

At one point I was in a hyperion overloaded with 3 harpoons coming at me and a venture class cruiser closing in as well as several other ships I hit auto resolve and somehow it said I had won managing to kill every other ship they had.  I was very confused but it worked out pretty well, though I wonder what the second in command was thinking.

My second in command took all those ships in a shuttle. And boarded the paragon and astral. :D

Second in command is good if you're fighting a fleet that you want to salvage, as you can save and reload until you get what you want. However if you're trying to capture a fleet DO NOT as the computer for whatever reason doesn't make use of the surrender mechanic.

That is a matter of personal preference on the saving.  I dislike save-scumming for outcomes.

Yeah, save-scumming to just roll the dice again is boring.  I will, however, seek out actually hard fights, and then try them a bunch of times to test different tactics, ship loadouts, or just generally practice piloting.

As far as the auto-resolve's skill... it's horrible at preventing enemy ships from retreating.  And it once lost an odyssey to an escaping pirate fleet of one lasher, one hound, and a single (yes, just one fighter, not a full squadron) piranha bomber.  And then had the gall to claim that was a "victory"

I usually only use it when there are one or two fast ships left that my forces won't catch that are retreating off the map, mostly to shave 10-20 seconds off.
