UNLIMITED SPEEEEE
« on: October 03, 2018, 12:35:04 AM »

What do you guys think about the idea that in-combat all ships should have unlimited max speed as long as they maintain 0 flux, only difference between ships is acceleration.

Right now the game has this addictive combat where the player is constantly thinking and engaged at all moments. The only dull moments and the most frustrating parts are when the player is just moving from one fight into another, dragging the screen to the max limits and waiting to engage.

Zero flux drive and burn drive are suppose to fix this but they both have flaws. The former bost the max speed only by a minimal amount and ended up as a during-firefight movement option. The latter is fun to use but the AI has huge problems with it.

Unlimited max speed with 0 flux can solve this travel problem pretty well I think. The AI could use it well, and it would open up some interesting possible manouvers from players like flanking escort formations and charging right up to faster ships is still not easy scince changing directions is equally hard.

It would make smaller ships impossible to catch and make retreats terribly unbalanced

Haha, that'd totally break the combat.

Mod it in, give it a try :D

If the problem is ships do not move fast enough, maybe try doubling combat speed?  Normal speed is excruciatingly slow, or at least slower paced than some other games.  Doubling the speed makes the pace more reasonable.

Well it's not like you can catch ships that are faster anyways. I don't really see how that could break combat. I'll have to give it a try. Where would you edit the files for those stats?

Sometimes you can with fighters or speed enhancing abilities (burn drive, maneuvering jets, plasma jets).

But if zero-flux gives you speed that's only limited by your acceleration, missile weapons become more or less useless at actually reaching zero-flux opponents, the smaller cargo/fuel ships like Dram/Buffalo become virtually impossible to intercept, and any ship will actually outrun fighters very quickly when at zero-flux (or just low flux if w/ officers using Helmsmanship 3).  In fact it'd probably make Helmsmanship 3 a god-tier skill as you can actually put shields up and fire to some extent without losing your ungodly speed, so Helmsmanship 3 could easily become the single deciding factor of retreat/pursuit engagements.

This sounds completely broken, but if you mod in a way to make projectiles inherit the velocity of the ship they were launched from I would be totally down to play high-speed Torpedo Tag.

The game you're looking for is Subspace (now called Continuum).  It's what led me to find Starsector to begin with.

I'm pretty sure ships are right now hardcapped to 600 speed. I seem to remember trying a mod to that effect and found that

My recent tests (someone asked what the cap was so I tried to figure it out) showed a game cap of 615.

I think I've seen speeds of 650 before but I'm pretty sure that was a burst of speed, not sustained speeds

I seem to recall the cap being 600 + whatever the acceleration is for the ship in question. So frigates would have the highest top speed of 650ish and then go down from there
