I mean, the Falcon is explicitly a light cruiser to the Eagles cruiser, rather then a cruiser to a heavy cruiser.

So i'd guess that the eagle came first, or they came together.

The "Space Wedge" has been around forever, pre-dating even the iconic Star Destroyer, so I would imagine that anyone who has followed sci-fi for any length of time has a Space Wedge-like ship burned into their subconscious. So, obviously, the Eagle came first.

But it is also highly probable that David, a talented artist, thought to himself, "I can't stoop so low to create yet another Space Wedge like some hack," so he designed the Falcon. So I obviously have to choose the Falcon.

And everyone knows that it's easier to cut a section out than add it in, so obviously the Eagle came first.

But everyone also knows that less is more, so obviously the Falcon came first.

The answer is so obvious!

Art dev, I reckon Eagle was 1st, but as it isn't quite a balanced sprite, David kept tinkering with it and ended up with the much more distinctive Falcon.

Canon lore, I'd guess Falcon is the older cruiser design, the design then retro fitted at some point into the Eagle to make it more durable.
The unretrofitted design then being redesignated a light cruiser.

So, can both be 1st?

In-universe probably it was the Eagle, but it's front has those weird spaces just besides the gun mounts, which give away it was filled. Not to mention that Falcon lacks small energy turrets in front of medium ones and it doesn't look jarring, as if those small turrets were covered.

Art dev, I actually suspect the opposite. Looking at the difference of the sprites (besides the obvious) makes me think that either the Eagle was made from the Falcon, or there was an in-between mockup that diverged into the two separate sprites. Said mock-up almost definitely lacked the Eagle's bulkier engines and extra armor directly in front of the missile hardpoints. My money's more on Falcon->Eagle, though.

afaik, this was the first video (maybe even first public look at SS art at all). and it has both Eagle and Falcon in it -- with their old large mounts! :D

While the 'space wedge' is a classic, the other design is as well. I distinctly remember seeing a ship similar to the Falcon in shape in the demo to Fury3, as well as some similar ships in Stargate.

I reckon David, going for a more dynamic and creative route, made the Falcon first, and then made the bigger one as a heavier alternative.

I essentially drew them both at the same time. I've attached the original sketch I sent Alex when proposing the ships, and I dug up the email where I proposed this pair of ships wherein I acknowledged that I was basically coming up with bird names used by American fighter jets. But it's like twins, they can't be born at the exact same time, right? I looked back in my files for the Falcon and Eagle sprites and ...

... it looks a lot like the Eagle was drawn first then modified into the Falcon. I say this because my Eagle file has a layer with an intermediate stage between sketch and "final" which the Falcon lacks. So although drawn at the same time, the Eagle was first by a sliver.

i think if they both existed as sketch before either existed as sprite, that's close enough to count as a draw.
