Should we expect another Hegemony capital ship?
« on: February 28, 2012, 04:55:30 PM »

There is already a wonderful variety in ships, but as we have 2 high tech capitals, 2 mid line capitals (well maybe the Odyssey classifies as high tech) I'm wondering if there is another low tech capital ship being cooked quietly up somewhere.

The Odyssey is DEFINITELY high tech. Do you see a ballistic mount on her? That's three high tech capital ships, one midline, and one low tech. Definitely need more midline and low tech capital craft.

The idea is that the various tech levels represent different - not "better" - ways to do things.

I'd love to see another hegemony beast. I've always thought missiles/shells were way cooler in space games than pew pew lasers. (Not to say that lasers aren't cool)

Definitely agree.

I think mid-line and low-tech ships offer the greatest challenge to use effectively, with their lackluster shields and reliance on generally slow and short-range weaponry. For that, I kind of like those ships. While I don't mind piloting a Paragon in the slightest (which comes with its own challenges such as managing high-flux weaponry and deciding when not to fire), the Onslaught and Conquest require so much more effort to be useful on the battlefield and come with even greater satisfaction when you succeed.

Kind of like a dual-clutch automatic versus a traditional stick shift car, in a sense.

Speed is a little TOO good in this game. A LOT of fights depend on map control, and if you can't achieve map control, your firepower is pointless.

Yeah, but for map control you use interceptors, broadswords, or thunders. That's why i prefer a carrier (astral, odyssey) as my flagship. God thunders are awesome.

I figured it was, but I was trying to justify another Hegemony ship on the basis of a pattern that I just wanted to be there.  That and it sort of resembles the Apogee in colour scheme a little more than the Paragon/Astral.  You're right though for sure.  I'm not sure what role another low tech cap ship could fulfill, maybe some sort of missile/command ship, as there isn't really one of those right now.

Imagine a low tech command ship with a few small pd defences, and the rest of the ordinance points into missiles. The pilum spam would block out the sun!

You won't be able to refit fighters and bombers at all. They're designed/balanced around having a particular set of weapons and would be very broken if you could change it. Which ones you pick for your fleet -out of quite a few that are available- is the choice here, not how they're outfitted.

MID-LINE.
MID-LINE *** EVERYWHERE.
SO MUCH WANT.
Right now I am building a fleet based on mid-line ships, but I CAN'T FIND ENOUGH.
Of course, I have Hammerheads and I think I will have 1-3 Conquests...
But I can't find a really good setup that covers all the bases in terms of mid-line tech.

The Venture is not a capital ship, and that big cargo vessel is a Civilian ship, Civilian ships cannot be capital ships.
