Another attempt at Low Tech... still failing, but sorta vaguely? I could see some of these (I generated about 50 in half an hour; these are just some I liked) working out with a bit of color magic and some pixel-art tuning.

I think the fault here is largely mine; I just kind of lazily threw together the base shape; it doesn't have enough lumpy bits for the AI to extrapolate from. Next time I'll try for the serrated-shell look and see if I can get the AI to understand what I'm going for. But I figured I should try and get a Domin-faker done before I try big bad stuff with epic armored shells.

AI Image Source Note: these images were all made with img2img prompts and Stablity AI's Stable Diffusion, using the model known as Dread_V2. Text prompts were probably something like, "spaceship, ((aerial view)), panel lines, greebles, (((detailed and intricate))), rocket engines, jet engines, small details, dirt, hydraulics, hatches, struts, grunge, rust, oil stains, post-apocalyptic, low-tech, steampunk, dieselpunk"

I don't think this whole AI talk should be in this thread, it feels like something that should be a separate one.
Sorry. I was dumb and thought we'd have a polite, considerate conversation in that other thread discussing the technical how-to, and somebody out there with more knowledge would show up and demonstrate some truly advanced techniques, give out free tips and all that. Oh well :)

Sassing me over noting that you are spamming a thread with mediocre AI generated images that are definitely not on topic (while you already have a separate thread that would be much more suited to it, too!) is a rather adult response, yeah, I agree.

These are all images that can be taken and refined into working sprites fairly easily. Anybody with a bit of art talent can refine these raw versions pretty easily.

I'm not even going to bother trying to argue on why that's not the point.
Just move the tirades about settings and raw output to your own thread, please.

I got nothing against posting completely finished sprites here.

Edit - and for the record, I generally like Stable Diffusion and what it does, I just don't think this is the proper place for it.

This thread is meant to provide artists with a place to put free-to-use art assets they wish for the Starsector community.

With a little more love, those could be perfectly acceptable ships, imo. All of them were generated from the same base, I just let the AI go a bit wild, trimmed a little and threw on turret positions. They need lights and a few little touches; I'll probably get that done when I'm done with work.

I was trying for armored shells, but the AI's really struggling with that concept. Probably will have to resort to doing two passes and compositing them.

Fakeslaught achieved 8)

This was a little trickier than would be ideal, for new people trying this kind of thing. Basically, to get the look somewhat right, I did the armored "shell" bit as one part in its own layer, with its own prompt, generated that, then did the body of the ship, and then a bit of post to blend both together.

Great, now I can down in history for starting the AI Wars. The Terminators' titanium skulls will be modeled on mine, lol.

Honestly, though? AI-assisted art's kind of fiddly and I'm enjoying the mental challenge of figuring out why it does <thing> really poorly but does <other thing> surprisingly well. Like, the crazy-detailed rear engines are based off a paucity of grayish blobs and my prompts aren't amazing, but it manages. Given that all of this tech isn't actually "thinking" in any real sense, half the battle is figuring out why it's being stupid about recognizing a pattern that you don't want, like the previous results where I was like, "I want armor, not vague metallic tumors!". I'm sticking with it because sometimes the results are pretty interesting and what the heck, I've done pretty much every other method.

I haven't had much time to mess with all the AI-assisted art this last couple of weeks, but I've had a few things running in the background... mainly, reworking the Glaug.

For everybody who doesn't remember the Glaug (which, well, is pretty much everybody these days, unless you played Vacuum back in the day) the Glaug were meant to be a weird faction that used biotechnological ships and weapons, and were largely based on the drawings of my son, who was about 9 or 10 at the time.

They were pretty basic ideas about insect-like forms and so on, drawn with typical 9-year-old skill, and I was using the process as a teaching tool. But the actual faction was fun to fight against, and I always thought they needed more ship designs, and this AI stuff is great for this kind of thing. I can't promise this is coming to a playable mod any time soon, but I'll release a proper sprite sheet of this stuff when I think it's reasonably complete.

Reminder to everyone that Imgur is deleting all images not hosted under an account by May 15. Now might be the time to grab copies of the sprites from both this and the first Spiral Arms thread and archive them before they disappear from the internet.

Big fan of your work and I for one thought that the Gulag sprites needed to be included in the current game and used them for my Hiver Swarm mod. I updated them with an AI assist for a more biological look in the latest version of the Hiver mod but I really like the mechanical look of your AI update version as well, well done!

Oh, dear, I guess I'll have to update before then. Noted.

@Dazs: I'm glad you like these. The Glaug (it's an obscure reference to the Zentraedi from Robotech, because I'm a fanboi for the work of Kazutaka Miyatake) are always one of those things that I look back on as a fun thing. When my son wanted to make "bug ships" I thought, fine, we'll make them green like the Zentraedi stuff, and vaguely reference the forms and motifs. These updates are just a fun way to see what the tech can do; I'm thinking a few more additions might be fun and leave people here with a Factions'-worth of base art incorporating the biomechanical / insect references I was interested in originally.

Having been quite annoyed by AI-generated images flooding stuff in the past, I do agree that it would be nice if AI stuff was mostly limited to its own thread as opposed to being mixed together with this one.
