I echo the previous comments - it all comes down to your playing style. Whether you're a capital ship kind of player or a frigate player, etc. Best you can do is try them all out until you find one that feels the most natural to you. :)

For me, however, I like the "middle road" the form of the Aurora cruiser. Its my current flagship, and I'm loving it. Its fast (the fastest cruiser, I think) and can hold its own against larger ships or lots of the smaller ones, and with a few escorts you'll travel fairly quickly around the map.

I changed the loadout to what I think is a more versatile and flux-friendly build - going for tactical and pulse lasers, annihilator rocket launchers, an MIRV launcher, integrated point defense AI, stabilized shields, and advanced turret gyros. With this setup, I often find myself under attack by several ships at once (worst I had was being under attack by an Odyssey and a Paragon with a couple of Wasps) and I realized that I barely had to vent, ever (in the example I set, it took me a while to need to vent, and the Aurora is fast enough to get out, vent, and get back in the thick of the fight). I just let them pound my shields, my own cannons firing back, as my faster frigate and destroyer escorts blast them from behind. Glorious fun.  ;D

Have you tried switching all your tactical lasers over to pd lasers and swapping integrated point defense AI over to advanced optics? The differences:

Pros:

- Less flux per second (each PD laser generates 50 flux, while tactical lasers 75)
- Six extra ordnance points (both PD lasers and tactical lasers are 5 each, but advanced optics is 15 on a cruiser while integrated PD AI is 21)
- Better turrent turn speed (PD lasers are 'excellent' over tactical lasers 'fast')
- 200 more range if you wanted to put any other beams on your ship (on the med slots maybe?)

Cons:

- Slightly less range (525 as opposed to 600)

My favourite way of setting her up :)

I have, actually! :D Minus the advanced optics part. Your loadout sounds like it would work very well against waves of fighters and missiles. The reasoning behind my going for the taclaser is because I wanted more power against bigger ships; I think I had a loadout using IR pulse lasers too, but can't remember why I opted for the taclasers over that.  ???

You're right, the integrated point defense AI is a point sink. I'll have to try out how well PD lasers or LR PD lasers work with advanced optics.  :)

Tempest Frigate definitely, crewed with elites they're virtually unstoppable. My personal build uses two PD lasers, a Sabot missiles. 0 Capacitors, 10 vents + dissipation. A squad of 3 with the other two with harpoon missiles it's a vicious squad.

I think low flux buildup is a godsend in most cases. One of the favourite ships I've used in the few days I've been playing the game is a Medusa with tac lasers and graviton beams as its main guns, plus Advanced Optics and the thing that reduces shield flux buildup--you can basically blast most enemies from outside their own guns' range, and while the damage isn't stellar, that doesn't matter much when your enemy can't shoot back and you have no ammo limits. I don't think I ever suffered an overload flying that ship...

Thank you all for your suggestions. I used the dev mode to test out all different ships, and i found this one Frig Hyperion i think its called, where i put missiles, machine guns  this laser thing and the adaptations for powerful, hardened all over shields and i love it. it doesn't lose shields as far as i can see, and it can overload other peoples then hit them with the missiles.
You all know this already i guess, but id have never looked at the frigs at all if there wasnt so many suggestions. il start a new game and work my way up to it.

Yep, that ship is so awesome it is crazy... Love it, but then it is more expensive than most destroyers and I've yet to see it in the wild.

I always go with the Lasher at the beginning and remove the Rockets and build on 3x Railguns at the Front and at the sites i left the 2 light MGs. Than i remove all Flux Vents and stuff. Addons are the Heavy Armor, Bulkheads and the better thrusters.
So i dont use the Shield because its only cause to overlead your ship and makes you vurnable. The armor can take way mor damage, when heavy, as a shield and the light PD weapons hold of the incoming misslies and also you should try to move around so they brun out after a while.
So with this setup its easy to kill other firgates, nobody can stand long with his shield up angainst 3 Railguns pounding on them! You can just hold the firebutten and not giving a duck about your flux level because the railguns can shoot also when flux is max and your ship only overloads when your shield gets hit.
#This belongts to suggestions thread# But there lies the Problem when letting the AI drive your ultimate-armor-firgate these stupid bastard runs in, with shield up, get overloadet after 2 shots and then get busted after 2 scounds. I want a option that Ships dont use there Shields! #end#

So when you are looking for bigger Ships always build in the thruster upgrade, its infuryating not to bring your mainguns in position befor the enemy moves around you! Good Flagships in my Oppinoin are the Eagler, Hammerhead and the Dominator Class. Good weapons for them are the Thumper, Heavy Mauler, Assault Chainguns, Heavy Auto Cannons, Pilum or Salamander Rockets, Heavy MG nad Hight Velocity Gun(Big Railguns :P).

EDIT: Oh my god is my english bad :/

Youll have to excuse me if I like being able to move around the battlefield.. preferably at a rate greater than the 3 km/year.

I don't like the Paragon. Powerful, to be sure, but I don't like its layout, and I don't like its weapon slots.

Completely agree... It's firepower isn't concentrated enough for me and flux is so dang hard to control on it...

Hence why I use it as a tachyon lance platform, and not much else. I prefer the Conquest and Onslaught as battleships.

I think with the Paragon, the key is knowing when to hold fire for all/selected weapon groups, since you can more or less outgun any other ship out there with all your guns blazing. "X" is very useful, as is being able to quickly toggle autofire on and off (or, in a pinch, simply switching to the autofire group to take manual control).
