I feel it's the Conquest. It feels so unique and interesting to me, and that's really Starsector summed up in my opinion.

The conquest, not only is it the picture google has when you search "starsector" it is also alex's twitter avatar.

Other than that, The apogee is certainly up there. one of the most recognizable ships, and it is on the home page.

Yeah, I get the that the hound would be popular to longtime players, but to new folks the current hound is probably completely forgettable and viewed as little more than an annoyance.

It's not a ship that has aged well, imo.

"Sunder-chan" resembles the heroine from the NES game The Guardian Legend.

I personally would love to see the Doom cruiser as the mascot, even though it's probably too rare in-game.  I love flying that ship when I can get my hands on it.

Onslaught and hound, like many have mentioned, are distinct enough and 'ship' enough (if that makes sense) to be a good mascot.  I was considering the Dominator, but it's a bit too...plain to be a mascot.  I do like the idea of the Sunder, which is also a unique and iconic ship.

If you want to impress people, you got to have a heavy metal war machine that can kill everyone and fit in with monster trucks, guns, and hard rock concerts.  Onslaught does that.

Onslaught also has Burn Drive.  You got to have flames, big flames.

You know, it would go faster if we painted it red...

I actually HAVE that game. It is an awesome game. Though, I haven't played the NES for a while... MOstly been busy with school.

as far as the Mascot ships?

The Onslaught, Conquest, humble hound, Lasher, and Wolf are my two cents.

I had that painting of the hound as my desktop for just under 2 years. I loved that ship in it's master of none way. I'm rather sad the shield adding mod is hard to get.

runner up feels like the onslaught.

I would vote for the Medusa simply because almost everyone flies one as their flagship until they can get something bigger.

I do it too :).
I'd also mention Hyperion as kind of ultimate player avatar - a ship that can do almost anything under player control, yet near completely useless as AI.

Sadly, I must agree. I still have many fond memories of the little ship. I used to have a custom mission where I'd have two hounds square off with only the medium turret filled, and I'd see which would kill the other first.
Of course, the mission had to be titled "Hound Jousting".

The Wolf or the Lasher

Two choice starting ship that maintain their FUN and usefullness throughout the campaign

Also a nice dividing line between High Tech and Low Tech

One provides overwhelming ballistic firepower in a small package, the other is a flighty skirmisher that brings oversized energy weapons. I guess they both also struggle with over fluxing themselves quickly.
Now that I think about it, they are sorta counterparts.

Gemini

Or if you want something fairly unique to Starsector but commonly overlooked then Scarab, Aurora or Odyssey
