How important are officer traits?
« on: May 04, 2017, 09:49:59 PM »

I've been reading some more threads and it seems like the cautious/aggressive traits are pretty influential, is that true?

I've never really paid much attention to anything other than officer skills.  Do you guys match officers traits to certain ships, if so how?

You pretty much need an aggressive Officer to make proper use of ships like SO Lasher. They seem to be less suicidal than they were in 0.72, but I'm still not comfortable with Idea of having significant amount of them.

I prefer Cautious as default, especially for long-range fragile ships like Drover or Sunder.

Steady is good for Moras (Cautious/Timid ones need someone to hide behind).

Timid can be used for fast fragile carriers (Heron/Drover) or missile spam platforms (Vigilance pretty much, Gryphon is too slow).

Anyone found a use for "reckless" officers?

Maybe as a way to get rid of some D ships?

Traits are pretty important, and if you pay attention to your ships with particular officer traits you'll start to notice them behaving quite differently.

I tend to follow along with the aforementioned assignments, and usually put Agressive officers aboard my fast-moving alpha-damage ships, Steady ones on the battleline ships and combat carriers, and Cautious officers on support ships, non-combat carriers and missile boats.

Ha!

Still, you'd think they'd have an intended use. Maybe they're a "brawler" class designed to kamikazee in and open up with everything.

Reckless = For tough ships that can take a beating and dish it out with equal measure

Or phase ships that usually wouldn't even take the time to do their job. (Looking at you Scylla)

Still loves purple. Still not skilled enough to make a mod that doesn't get that one damn error.

My aggressive officer in his Afflictor has been amazing. He takes advantage of the ship and goes in for the kill every time. Pretty close to how I would fly it.

Anyone found a use for "reckless" officers?

I put one in my XIV onslaught and it's actually pretty amazing. He Leeroy Jenkins' in to battle and completely breaks the line, I have some fighter escorts on him just so he doesn't get overwhelmed and I just follow in with my paragon and mop up everything and also just make sure he doesn't die. It's pretty hectic but surprisingly effective since enemy ships back off when they take too much damage/are at high flux and it ensures they get disabled. Once you have one or two key ships killed the numbers stack more in your favour and the fight gets easier.

He's also a very good pinch hitter in big battles. I send my tanky ships and carriers (paragon, legion, mora) in first to engage and absorb missiles/take out fighters then send old mate in to decimate. I put 4 harpoon pods on him which is enough to overload the shields of some cruisers in one volley. He's truly a thing of beauty.

I actually only started paying attention to traits when I mistakenly got a timid and cautious officer who sold me into trouble when they pussied out of fights, they're probably only good on fire support carriers. Even then they're usually tanky enough to actually do some fighting.
