Ok this is just me niggling.  I love seeing the actual ship sprites on the map, but it seems like the fighters should be in hangar rather than flying about the fleet.

Am I the only one that feels like this?

I think someone has already complained about this. Personally I appreciate the eye-candy, but it's a sensible point - perhaps it could be a toggleable option in the main menu settings.

I won't argue with about the eye candy.  Maybe they're like X-wings in Star Wars.  These little guys have their own jumpdrives right?

once i thought bringing fighters into hyperspace without sufficient carriers would destroy those fighters :-X

I think in Starsector it's all about drive fields. Presumably the fleet changes space around them in some fashion, and the fighters are just along for the ride. Doubt they could fly off on their own.

The game was completed 8 years ago and we get a free expansion every year.

Arranging holidays in an embrace with the Starsector is priceless.

I think the view of fleets on the map is an abstraction of fleet size anyway, I interpret that they are in the hanger, your UI is just showing them along with the fleet for informational purposes

Don't remember exactly which one, but the codex entry of Hermes, Hound or something said "the smallest ship with Hyperdrive capability" or something. So yeah, no X-wing.

I agree, would make fighter heavy fleets look less messy and makes sense considering the lore.

^^^^That used to be how the Hound worked - it was the smallest ship with hangar space to carry strikecraft, but didn't have RnR space to replace them in combat.

They're escorting the fleet in shifts to protect from things like surprise phase ship attacks, clearly.   :P

I think a hyperspace drive might just be needed to get in or out of hyperspace. Fighters clearly don't need them to fight in hyperspace, nor do ships consume fuel in battle.

(Probably just a gameplay abstraction, that. Plus drive field shenanigans, but drive field shenanigans are a given.)

Fighters in fleets is a leftover before carriers overhaul. Better to remove them so player cant see information about enemy strike craft type before actual engagement.

When an encounter begins and player needs to choose what to do, player can view ship info by moving cursor over a ship.  I do not remember if the info includes weapons but if it does, it would include the ship's fighter chips too.

It does and it does. Beginning an encounter, you have access to weapons, fighters, and even hullmods installed on every single ship in the enemy fleet, just by mousing over each one.

Making fighters non-visible in fleets so that "players can't see information about enemy strike craft", while it sounds plausible, is actually a somewhat redundant idea.
