I had this issue, and worked around this by switching to java 8, though I think it's v8 64 bit.  (It was whatever i had around from a modded 0.7.2a install).

Let me know if you want any further details, just giving you another data point.  My system is windows 7, 64 bit OS, 8gb of ram, i5 2500K (and it's only juuuust starting to feel old now.)

How did you use java 8? Did you mess with the settings file?
