Worth it to survey gas giants?

They seem to be by far the toughest to survey with some requiring over 600 crew and over 100 supplies. So, before I start burning through giant stacks of supplies, can you get some high class survey data off them?

On a mostly unrelated note...I just found a random derelict with nearly 900 units of fuel—as you can see though I had to leave behind over half of it! D:

The higher difficulty %, the higher the XP modifier. You get can get the full range of survey data classes off them from what I've seen.

I've not had any good gas giant yet; they're just a supply vacuum in my experience.

I'm stacking loads of survey mods in my current fleet (to bring all terrestrial planets down to 5 supplies, regardless of conditions), but the big ice giants still cost quite a lot of supplies; far more than they earn in survey data value.

Ah, okay, I'll hold off for awhile then. Still fairly early game and 100+ supplies per survey of a gas giant is pretty gnarly...
