Let's brainstorm new contract types!

Right now the contract system offers little variety, let's try to come up with new interesting ways to make a buck.

  • Procure a certain class of ship- script should check if the markets in reasonable radius have the ship available, other ways to fulfill would be selling the ship from your fleet or trying to capture one in a battle,
    (could be an illegal contract)

  • Procure x number of a specific weapon- same deal as with the last contract

  • Courier work- carry encoded message to another system on a short timer, chance that you might be intercepted by a fleet of the factions enemies

  • Safehouse assault- Raid a safehouse and capture a fugitive, safehouse would be on some small market or an uninhabited barren world, you would need lots of marines to assault it,
    fleet might patrol near the safehouse so sneaking in is option. You might be attacked by fugitives allies or other greedy bounty hunters on the way back

  • Ferry passengers from A to B- What it says on the tin
    (something to make passenger ships have a value to the player).

  • Pilgrimage- Ferry Luddic pilgrims to a holy site and back
    (might be ambushed by Luddic Path)

  • Anti-smuggling initiative- Faction quest to scan ships for illegal cargo, needs high faction rep and commission, smugglers will try to run from you (chance to keep some of the contraband)

  • Resupply mission-Deliver supplies, fuel and crew to a fleet on the field, needs commission, you might be stopped by the factions enemies, gain lots of rep

My ideas are quite bad, but maybe someone else comes up with something clever.  ;)

How about escort contracts.

Escorting lowly traders from point A to point B for a "small" fee
or
Help smugglers sneak in a station by keeping the nearby fleets occupied.
etc. etc.

  • Privateer: Destroy X FP of ships belonging to a specified enemy faction within the given time period. Can have variants like commerce raiding (bonus points for attacking non-combat ships) or somesuch.
  • Cause "accident": A certain fleet will be going from A to B at the specified time. Make sure it never gets there.
  • Survey planet: Exactly what it says on the tin.

    How about escort contracts.

    Escorting lowly traders from point A to point B for a "small" fee
    Then half-way pirates make you a bigger offer to walk away  8)


    • Privateer: Destroy X FP of ships belonging to a specified enemy faction within the given time period. Can have variants like commerce raiding (bonus points for attacking non-combat ships) or somesuch.

    Oh, I like this one. Could even have other faction privateer companies show up for the contracts duration.

    I have another two:

    • Sabotage production: Sneak to a market undetected and use marines to temporarily stop production of something.
      (or instead of marines the contract gives you a bomb or a datapad with a specifically engineered virus ala. Stuxnet)
    • Sabotage stockpile: Sneak to a market undetected and use marines to destroy part of the stockpile.

    Privateer, but for all trade fleets in a certain area/going to a certain market not belonging to faction you have contract with.

    • Ferry wanted people
    Basically like smuggling, but with passengers instead.

    • Prisoner transport
    Deliver a high number of passengers with a chance of being intercepted by pirated who wants to free them.

    • Retrieve spy data
    Sneak into enemy base and retrieve sensitive data from a spy and return it.

    High Value Transport, like prisoner transport, but instead a person is transported to a location while x and x faction become temporarily hostile, upon completion, rep drop with those factions.

    That would make so many factions terribly angry, maybe if you attack with transponder off you get far reduced negative rep for the mission duration. Or maybe the mission makes all factions that are not hostile to contract poster avoid that market.

    Or even better, real privateering! Make it so that if the merchant fleet is much smaller than yours you can intimidate them to give up the cargo, or you blast the defenders, take the cargo and let the civilian ships go.

    We really need escort missions, both ways. Get hired as escorts for a fleet and hire fleets as escorts - especially now that battles aren't 1 on 1 anymore and battles in progress can be joined there's really no obstacle anymore. Fixed payout for the mission plus a bonus for every hostile destroyed in the course of the mission so even uneventful trips pay for fuel and supply use and then some, while dangerous trips pay extra hazard pay should take care of the monetary rewards.

    Hiring private guns to escort you sounds cool, the should only join the attack if you are being attacked though.

    It would be nice if some of the missions were unique, special one-offs.  Maybe something like a special transport mission involving weird and unusual (yet mundane) cargo, and does something very silly as soon as you accept it and take off.

    Could you elaborate? Wait, i got one. You transport crates of snakes, the crates have holes, oh shiit snakes on a spaceplane.

    Something like the "Wolf, goat, and cabbage" mission from the game Endless Sky.  It is offered when the game date is April 1st.  You are offered 100,000 credits for delivery (which is generous given how early in the game the mission is likely to be offered, before the war event), but being an April Fool's joke, the goat eats the cabbage, then the wolf eats the goat as soon as your ship takes off.  When you finish the mission, you read some silly monologue and get paid only a third of the posted reward (for delivering the wolf who ate the rest of the two cargo items).
