So how do you do it ? Instead of buying 500 crew i only need 30. Is there a key i need to hold down in order to get 30 or what??

Shift+click.

Now how to select 10, that's the real trick. Having to buy 200 crewmen one at a time is a real PITA.

shift+click.. and while holding the mouse button down drag the mouse to the right. and you can select large amounts of units quickly. esspecially good when you need 100-400 men

You won't be able to refit fighters and bombers at all. They're designed/balanced around having a particular set of weapons and would be very broken if you could change it. Which ones you pick for your fleet -out of quite a few that are available- is the choice here, not how they're outfitted.

Oh, that's quite neat. Though I find shift+click+drag not overly intuitive. Why do I need to hold down shift for it anyway? Why can't I just click+drag? That'd be much better.

I'm sure it's something they intend to implement eventually. I personally think a click and hold type system would be nice.
