Omen EMP mine
« on: November 16, 2016, 10:14:34 PM »

I hate the omen and never use it. I like the idea of an aoe but the fact that the ship needs to be paper thin to make its EMP stoppable makes me never want to play ot, which is a shame cause if it weren't so wimpy I'd use the heck out of it.
So the fix: Press F, Omen lays an armored egg that floats freely like a bomb (versatile uses, can throw into enemy formation or drop it to cover yourself as you turn and run) and uses the Omen's current system for it.
Relatively simple implementation, let's the omen get armor back while also giving it an emp system the enemy can try to shoot to death

I'm not really sure if the AI can even handle a system like that to be honest.

Also, Alex said the Omen was getting a bunch of buffs in the next version. It'll still probably be a fragile ship, but hopefully survivable enough to act as a proper escort. That powerful EMP is going to be handy now that fighters will be more dangerous.

one simple and relatively small change i'd like to see to Omen's (and Shade's) system is being able to cancel it, probably by pressing the system button a second time. since it's rather situational, disables weapons for its duration and lasts several seconds, it often feels like a large part of it is wasted.
Shade can cancel its system with phase cloak already, but it feels kinda awkward to do that intentionally, similar to the now removed vent-cancel of Burn Drive.

At its cost, Omen is a liability being unable to cancel its system.  If it was as cheap as a Hound, it might have a point.  Since phase cloak was changed, phasing to cancel EMP hurts the Shade too.

Omen?  Fragile?  ...Are we playing the same game?  Sure, it doesn't have much armor or hull, but it has an exceptionally strong shield; the thing is more durable than most destroyers (and far more capable of backing off to vent).

Wyvern is 100% correct about the math.

The changes to the Omen in the current dev build, btw:

Increased armor to 125 (from 50)
Increased maximum flux to 2500 (from 2200)
Increased shield arc to 360 degrees

Granted, it got a very efficient shield emitter, and its flux pool isn't really bad either. But no matter how efficient its shield is, the Omen is still just a frigate. Sudden KE bursts (like Needlers) will rip its shield, armor and hull in a blink.

I couldn't find a proper build for an attack Omen, however i found the EMP emitter very handy for escort duty. Unfortunately, escorts usually have to soak up a lot damage in battle. Centurions, Brawlers and Monitors are properly equipped for this job. The Omen? Not so much.

With the new changes, the Omen will at least have a bit more armor to survive a few more KE shots. The 360° shield will also increase its survivability against attacks from multiple angles. The increased flux cap is a nice bonus too.

Probably not a competitive choice for the late game, but could have its uses for early/mid game now.

my concern is that i don't find the omen fun to play against, or to play as. Maybe it's just me but the omen can't take a punch well enough for me to use (can't survive one overload usually), which is fixed with a buff but on the other hand it's not fun for me to fight because it's ship system is crippling (again I rarely survive one overload) because I can't finish it off if it goes emp before I get completely disabled (because I'm already on the verge of an overload if it's used it), which gets worse if it gets a buff

Current Omen is as durable as a fighter.  It has worse durability than Hyperion.  Change to 360 shields means it saves a ton of OP, but I suspect that will not help enough.

Omen is agile enough to doge most baslitic fire, even needlers. Then the shield take the rest. In the player's hands, its baisically the frigate that can draw the most fire. Also if you want AI to draw fire, I think youll need something with lots of armor and not much flux use like the venture or enforcer.

So overall, these changes will prob help the AI omen somewhat
