Hi everyone. I've been a longtime player. Recently I got my cousin with special needs into the game. He really enjoys it but he says it moves too fast. Is there anyway to slow the game down? I've tried to use speedhack on cheat engine but Idk if it doesn't work on java games or what. Any help would mean a lot.

You could try to limit the FPS of the game. I think there should be an option in C:\Games\Starsector\starsector-core\data\config\settings.json that controls FPS.

Sadly for me no FPS limiter seems to work usually, but I have found a program that always works for me on any game. I use Dxtory to force FPS to stay at a specific rate. All you have to do is install it, go to the Advanced Tab and on the bottom check the Limit Video FPS tickbox and enter the FPS you want. It works without fail and obviously if you will put something like 15 FPS, the while game will become slower. I am not sure though now it will look for the game to run on 15 FPS. For that you will have to actually test it yourself.

You do NOT need to register and buy Dxtory, to just use the FPS limiter.

i havent actually looked at the game files yet for modding
but the game engine should have a single number used to synchronize everything based on system time (instead of clock speed - which is why the old dos games etc run so incredibly fast on modern machines, ...... clock speed timer)

hopefully just changing the speed that that number increases at will slow the game while still allowing a smooth 60fps
no promises though.

FPS limit will not slow the game down at all, it will just make it look stuttery.

While it'll make it more stuttery, you're wrong on the speed part. Before this pc I had a real crappy one and my average FPS was around 15, tend to drop to 7 with more ships on screen. After I got the new pc I needed a couple of hours to get used to the much more faster gameplay. The difference is really huge, trust me.

There's definitely a way to change the way time passes during combat in the API. I'll try to make a mod, since I've always wanted to see how combat looks slowed down a bit, though I'm not making any promises since I'm still new to modding.
It may take up to a day or so, since I can't work on it right now.

I guess only people like me that have experienced lower FPS can realize that it can slow down games?  

There are though some games that their internal engine FPS is limited to lower (lets say 30) than 60 FPS, so people that experience both 60 and 30 FPS, might think that lower FPS do not slow down games, but just make games feel less fluid.

Below 30fps, the game will slow down.

If it's really important, I could make a mod to make it always run at a slower speed.

You might be targeting the wrong process (starsector.exe) instead of the right one (java.exe)
If that doesn't work, setting the FPS to something like 15 or 20 should, in theory

Added a "combatSpeedMult" value to settings.json, but obviously that's no help until the release. For now, as others have mentioned, a mod for this seems like the best bet.

In the meantime, I've put together a script which I'll link in this post after I'm done making it so you can toggle the "slow motion" on and off.
