Basic Battle Setup Beforehand (Formations and Autoactions)
« on: August 19, 2016, 09:05:02 AM »

This is a big suggestion that probably will take a long time but I think it would help develop the combat in sandbox a lot. What I mean is being able to assign a few predefined deployments for ships in campaign (instead of getting that "choose ships to deploy" prompt), and also assigning limited positioning information.

What that would mean is having a new menu where you're given a small slice of the battlefield to position ships, and also giving the ships escort commands that would be used at the start of the battle (and thus consume CP like normal). Even when it comes to small scale battles in campaign I find myself wasting a bunch of cp just to make sure that for maybe my frigates with shields reach the enemy cruiser and absorb fire 5 seconds before the unshielded ones arrive

sounds good. when i have a fleet of very specialized ships, it's pretty annoying if they're not properly spread out across my fleet, so they could 'work together'.

for example, if i have some long-range beam supports, and some brawlers supposed to 'tank' and pressure shields: if all my tanks start out on the left flank of my fleet, and all my support on the right flank, they usually get seperated when they encounter the enemy. that's especially true if i give several capture orders, so they head out to different corners of the battlefield.
i can tell specific ships to go to specific points, but then i usually lose a bit of time in getting to capture points. and i don't have enough CP to tell every ship exactly where i want them.

read the hints on startup Sy ......
select all the ships that u want together (that are part of the specialized task group, even though they are spread around in the fleet) and before choosing deploy ...... press CTRL+1 (or CTRL+2) then every time u want to deploy the specialized fleet, press 1 (or 2) to reselect the taskforce.

the point of this suggestion is formations, not ship selection

uhm... what? i was talking about formation; specifically, the formation (or lack thereof) that your fleet is in when it first travel-drives onto the battlefield. which is, as i understood it, what WM46 was talking about. i didn't mention selection of ships in the pre-battle deployment panel at all.

am i missing something here, or are you? ^^

Sy is correct, like if you wanted to group your ships into two wedge fleets with cruisers at the front, behind them 2 DE, then 3 frigates, you could set it up beforehand. And from what I understand from reading the hint in game, the control groups are just for if you want to assign rally/intercept commands in tactical view, and not assign escorts like how I mean.

yes, the ctrl-groups are just for quickly selecting set groups of ships, both in the deployment panel and on the tactical map. they don't cause the grouped ships to act together as a unit.

i missunderstood ur post sy

no worries.

you know, i actually did only recently find out about ctrl-groups being usable in the deployment panel, almost by coincidence, despite having played hundreds of hours of SS at this point.... so i probably really should read those hints. :D

tie it into a fleet command skill that intertwines with an (eventual) fleet detachment skill, that winds up doing stuff like allowing you to, after a delay, deploy small ships like frigates and fighters from the sides of the a/o like in a persuit engagement

Honestly, the game is much more fun when you edit the file and change the max battle size for small field to 900 or w/e. Ships plow into each other and fragile ships like medusa or hammerheads can be give orders to move to the sides. Battles are so fast and disabled cruiser hulls on the frontline quickly become cover or obstacles.

Haven't played large battles since the construction rig update
