Damage Animations
« on: February 23, 2012, 01:55:31 AM »

I am really enjoying this game, especially the detailed pixel art style. This however is diminished a lot by the annoying charcoal colour that the ships turn when fired upon. Instead of this, maybe large metal scrapings come off the hull? This can be done in conjunction with a smaller, quickly dissipating version of the superheating redness animation, to produce very effective damage indicator (have different stages of the same sprite, showing different looking hulls depending on amount of HP the ship has remaining, without discolouration). The ships in this game look incredible, but in the game's current state, getting shot makes your ship look like a flying rock with guns.

Thank you for reading my post, and any additions or replies would be greatly appreciated.

I understand and agree the choice of current damage cosmetics. If you've taken a beating, the paint is coming off, the hull is breached and looking completely incinerated. You're basically turned into space debris.

Seeing things on fire, smoking, and an overall downgrade of combat, maneuverability, and speed would be welcome though.

I have good memories of my mech being battered in various mw games and seeing my ship overlay go from green to yellow and finally limping home half red with various blacked out spaces. Any kind of readout like that would be pretty nice down in the UI. I know that the armor disappears down in the lower left so that is a start.

One thing I think I'd like to see when weapons are destroyed, would be in the weapon group to see either a progress bar for repairs replacing that weapon's text entry or at least turn the weapon name to red. As it is right now, it is hard to tell at a glance what weapons are destroyed and how soon they are from coming back online.

I know it has floaty text which I like, but sometimes I am zoomed out too far or the screen is scrolled way off to the side and I miss what gets broken.

i wish i could get mech warrior 3 to run on my comp LOL the game is so old though that it uses Direct X drivers that you cant get your hands on anymore and current operating systems dont like them anyway.  :'(

had so much fun with that game.

had a lot of fun with mech commander 2 as well.

now back to the context of this game :P

it would be nice to see a color shift in weapons that have been disabled on our HUD as well as maybe a color change in the armor remaining on our ship as it gets blasted off. would also be cool to see the color change/shift on the HUD of our target in particular dots on the target ship overlay that represented emp damaged systems so we could tell where the safe approach vectors are.

as it is now.. you can see the words light up telling you something is disabled but its rather quick and small so i think this could help out a bit with battle information being relayed to the player.

You won't be able to refit fighters and bombers at all. They're designed/balanced around having a particular set of weapons and would be very broken if you could change it. Which ones you pick for your fleet -out of quite a few that are available- is the choice here, not how they're outfitted.
