Once you bring in mods there's a number of options that are arguably superior to any vanilla design, but yeah, the Mantis is amazing.
And before anyone takes offense again, I don't mean it's overpowered, I simply love that ship.

For stuff that can fight back a Desdinova might work pretty well too, but she's a bit on the expensive side so whatever you're chasing better be worth it.

At this point, I can't imagine playing the game vanilla with the tiny ship variety.

The mantis is really nice, just kinda fragile. I guess the Feldspar has broken my sense of how survivable a frigate should be.

I tried a semi-vanilla setup recently, with just Nexerelin and the ships and weapons pack and it was pretty enjoyable.
Of course you're missing an awful lot of fancy designs and weapons and the sector is kinda small, but having everything fit visually and thematically was really nice for a change.

It's one of the reasons I often stay away from Scy, Neutrino and Diable Avionics (not to mention AI War and Crystanite), even though I like their stuff. They look good on their own, but the art style is noticeably different from vanilla, so if I do use them I build my fleet from just one or two factions.
Maybe that's just a mild form of OCD on my part though.

As for the Mantis being fragile, well, most frigates I like are.
She can bob and weave though, is fast, has a pretty good flux balance and allows for a lot of effective configurations.

Imaginos is nice, but not as effective as Hyperion.  Last time I tried Imaginos, it can kill two ships in the time it takes Hyperion to kill three.

i can understand that ........... only 1 available weapon slot and already high flux usage.

yet at the same time: u dont need 4 arms, a crystal ball to see the future, 2 shots of speed and the paranoia of a broken CIA-agent-turned-conspiracy-nut to pilot it effectively.

Both of them cost the same (at least they did last year).  Hyperion is kind of easy to use if you know what you are doing.

The non-vanilla feel of Diable ships kinda started to irk me finally. So I started over and switched to Tiandong and made a customized version of a Chengdu. Turned it from cheap to downright pure force of fast-flying teleporting dread and doom, can rapid fire those massive rounds if I feel angry about killing that one phase cloaking frellnik ..so satisfying:

Spoiler
Voluntary picture deletion. Original image of config modified and with very little sprite edits of Chengdu (for personal in-game use only).

I imagine my modified vessels are using Timelord tech for storage for a while now. Since the actual ship in the mod that has that massive cannon is too slow and doesn't have a launch bay I had to improvise for my own sanity because I needed that cannon and I needed it on a ship I like.

Because it's awesome for me. It's how I play my games. Its how I relax and let myself calm.

If you ever have an idea for a new ship for the THI mod, I will always listen and consider it and I love suggestions... But one of the requirements is that it would be a vanilla balanced design.

Thanks. Though I'm not good with keeping things balanced (would ask a lot of mental strain from me) but I am good at ideas and one of them I got was a smaller/bulkier/compact version or a faster version of the Wuzhang (longer rear end? just a random thought).

Hope my picture of the modified Chengdu didn't somehow offend you as I only purely did the thing for myself for gameplay and to better give you folk idea of what I'm about in single player games.

EDIT: Just tried the unmodded Chengdu legit in the simulation and tried to do battle with it with mining blaster (call it silly or whatever, I don't care). Pardon me for making an alt version of the ship to be an unbalanced OP one.

EDIT2: Tested properly both Wuzhang and Hanzhong against Onslaught, both ships with a captain that has the OP points at large numbers so I had everything important on them. Wuzhang did better than Hanzhong with two Hellbore cannons. Managed to crush Onslaught with both of the ships but still it all was too slow and nerve-racking for me still with the Onslaught disabling the systems and having to vent flux. Again pardon me for being a cheater! >:(
I like both of the ships, I'm just having hard time playing anything legit.
