Game wont start
« on: December 09, 2015, 03:38:20 AM »

After installing the latest version (0.7.1a) the game does not start. The curser briefly indicates that it's loading but then nothing happens. I've tried restarting and reinstalling as well as reading some of the other forum posts that describe similar problems.

OS?
PC spec?
Fresh install?

Does the launcher appear?
What does Starsector's error log show?

Dang! Sorry. I'm terrible at this.

Windows 7 64 bit
Fresh install (after uninstalling the previous version)
The launcher (the window to enter the product key) does not open

i7 4710HQ 2.5 GHz
8 GB ram
Geforece GTX860M

Where do I find the error log?

Hi - it sounds like 0.7a worked for you, but 0.7.1a doesn't, is that right?

If so: can you try a clean reinstall? By that I mean manually removing the Starsector folder (after copying off any saves/mods you care about), instead of running the uninstaller. It's possible something is wrong there.

Another thing to try is running the game using the starsector.bat file found in in the starsector-core folder.

The starsector.log file is in that folder too, but I doubt there's anything of use - it sounds like the game is not getting far enough to be able to start writing there.

Thanks for the reply. I was running Starsector 0.65.2a before. I played that to death and only recently remembered I even own this game after seeing it on youtube.

It was running fine though and I have not changed my system at all since then.

I did try a clean reinstall. I removed everything and had a bit of a look around the registry and removed whatever I found there. I manually deleted the folder and tried installing on a different hard drive. I've also tried starting from the BAT file.

There is no log file in the core folder. I believe you are right and that the game is not getting far enough to start writing it. All I get is a fraction of a second of the loading cursor and then nothing.

Fixed it. Searched for the error message and a post with a solution came up. Thanks anyway.

Glad you got it working! Mind letting me know what did the trick, for future reference?

Sure. I had to install java run time environment 64 bit version, and replace the jre folder in the star sector folder with the the jre8.066 (or whatever version it was) folder that was created during the java runtime environement installation.
