Your character portrait should not appear elsewhere in the game
« on: December 08, 2015, 02:34:46 AM »

With a finite amount of portraits it is unavoidable that they reoccur, but when it happens with your character's portrait it's much more immersion breaking then usually. Moreover, it becomes downright confusing when you have one (or several!) officers with the same face as you.

If the chosen portrait could be removed from the roster for the ongoing playthrough that would be fabulous :)

Agreed. It breaks immersion slightly which is otherwise something this game does excellently.

Maybe player wants to hire body doubles like a silly Bond villain.  That said, I refuse to hire officers that look like me!  I eventually fire officers with duplicate faces once I find more than I can hire.

I also think this, but I think it works this way because the game don't have player faces yet (all portraits are actually NPC portraits... even before officers existed each faction had its own set of portraits that were used when communicating with fleets).

Thus I think it is more like it gives the option to choose NPC portraits.

The correct handling would be keep the current NPC portraits (And allow you to use them) but also offer player-only portraits... But I guess that would be expensive now (one game with a interesting handling of this, is "sunless sea", where player portraits are black sillouetes, thus you can imagine the contents of the portrait beside the sillouete).

Ditto, feels kind of like a bug workaround, hence the suggestion.

Yeah, that would be too expensive and not expedient. I hope that eventually some unique NPCs will get personal portraits. You know, if and when the game gets a background story.

Another great feature would be full support for custom portraits :)

... and I've added a TODO item to skip the player-picked portrait when generating NPCs/officers. Been always meaning to do that.

Any civilian-only portraits?  It is funny that all civilians appear the same as military officers or hardened spacers.  Well, few of the Tri-Tachyon portraits appear more like civilians than officers or mercs.

Seconded... I currently play with the weird 3D glasses guy, because he more or less look like me.

Still, I play mostly as merchant, and there are no merchant portraits (not even for the NPCs... lots of merchant fleets with people wearing military uniform and beret)

Maybe clone brush out all the overtly faction specific insignia etc from the player versions of the portraits?

When you start the game you have no faction, but you can choose a portrait of somebody wearing tri tachyon emblem, etc. That seems odd to me.

Why not just airbrush that stuff out of the portrait? It means having a few extra graphic files but not much. And its easier than painting a whole new portrait.

You could get a lot more out of the starting portrait choices if so many of them weren't obviously for one or another faction.

He used to appear as some mean, balding, whacked-out pirate with 3D glasses instead of an eyepatch (to me, at least).  Now, he appears almost like an almost harmless fat nerd.  He is more detailed today (and a bit more cartoonish), and is alright.

Also, David's original avatar used to appear as a young, handsome merc.  Now, he looks like Dracula with make-up.  One of the few portraits where I prefer the original over the updated style.
