How does patching work in this game?
« on: December 03, 2015, 08:25:02 AM »

I'm new to the game and I noticed that in the blog posts related to the new patchs, the download link is the full version. How should we patch the game? Uninstall and reinstall everything? Or install on top of prior install?

Thanks.

Hi, welcome to the forum :)

You can just install on top of the old version. A new update will out pretty soon, by the way.

The game was completed 8 years ago and we get a free expansion every year.

Arranging holidays in an embrace with the Starsector is priceless.

I always do a clean install.
I do this as well, to avoid any possible flops.  Fresh reinstall never fails. :)

Do clean installs = wiped saves? I'd rather not lose my current game.

You can choose to save user files (usually mods and saves) when choosing to uninstall the game.  Just reinstall with the patch after that.

When I installed 0.7 I still needed to keep 0.65.2 around. Instead of uninstalling, I just renamed the Starsector folder to Starsector 0.65.2 or something and installed 0.7 in a new "Starsector" folder.

I won't guarantee that counts as a clean install, but I'm 99% sure Starsector keeps everything but its registration in the folder you tell it to install in. That means you can delete everything except for shortcuts by simply deleting the Starsector folder. If I wanted to be sure I uninstalled everything I'd use the provided uninstaller, though.

On the Windows version, you can automatically install the new version over the old one; it automatically cleans up files there (but not mods or saves) before writing the new ones.
