Unit groups [Not a bug]
« on: May 04, 2011, 09:10:53 PM »

(PS : I figure this is probably just something you guys aren't done with yet, but I thought it'd be proper to just report it here for tracking)

Summary:
Units given individual move orders lose unit grouping.

How to reproduce:
Deploy a unit - it will have a unit group. (this appears to be an enforced requirement - that no unit can be spawned without a group)

Select a unit individually by clicking on it, and give it an order. The unit will no longer have a unit group.

There does not appear to be a way to put it back in a group, and the unit is now inaccessible via hotkeys.

Status
Apparently, not a bug - just a hard to find feature. Pending UI streamlining.

Thanks for the report, but this is an obscure feature :)

To add a ship to a group, go to the Warroom, select the appropriate group and then shift click the ship or fighter wing. You can also remove ships/wings from a group in the same fashion, by shift-clicking them.

We will definitely streamline this for the next alpha release.

Edit: The format of your bug report is really useful!

I had no trouble with this. Ships applied to a number will move in groups. When I want a ship do another objective, it automatically gets removed without breaking fleet formation. I think this feature is nice. When that ship has done its mission, add him again in the warroom.

Ah I see.

I agree with iStealtherl. Good feature - just needs a good UI to match.

Suggest grouping all assigned units in the Units Deployed section by assigned group numbers, making it easy to see what's in which group.

Also, suggest making groupings mandatory, for uniformity's sake. When a unit is selected and given a separate order, automatically assign to either a separate group (any unused group number), or into a special temporary group (a detachment) with appropriate hotkey. (you could use combination hotkeys for this - 1 for group 1, and 1-1 for detachment 1 of group 1)

Will elaborate further if the devs want. (Do set up a suggestions thread for things like these)

That's kind of counter the usual idiom for RTS-style controls, isn't it?

Standard: click to select, shift-group to add/reassign
Here: select group, shift-click to add

One thing that would be nice would be the option to mass select / mass order.
