Remove Quit Confirmation from Main Menu
« on: July 19, 2023, 11:34:53 AM »

As it stands there's a popup confirmation asking "Really Exit?" when the user clicks the Quit menu option. There doesn't seem to be any legitimate reason for this popup. It isn't an impactful choice that the player might have a negative experience from accidentally clicking  - the player isn't going to lose any data from this choice; In contrast clicking EXIT from the main menu while in a campaign does have a meaningful confirmation popup as they're about to lose any progress since the last save. As it stands it comes across as petty and insecure, like the game developers are disappointed that you'd want to leave the game, which is a feeling they probably don't want players to feel. Instead simply allowing the player to quit the game without any confirmation communicates confidence in their product and treats the player with respect.

You'd need to also remove the keybinding of escape to quit if you did this, otherwise you'd have players accidentally quitting the game when all they were really trying to do was back out of the codex, or the settings menu, or missions, or character creation, or... etc.

As long as that gets done alongside the OP's suggested change, though, I've no particularly strong opinion either way.

I actually didn't know that Esc would exit out of the game from the main menu! It does seem to me that if hitting Esc a popup is indeed warranted, as that could truly happen accidentally. Perhaps if a user clicks on Quit then no popup, but if they use Esc then yes show a popup?

Just wanted to say, I changed the wording to "Exit game?". I think the wording is really the issue here; requiring a confirmation to exit the game seems pretty reasonable given that loading it can take some appreciable amount of time, especially if running with a bunch of mods.

Thank you for mentioning this! It's something that has been in there for a *long* time and I literally never read it anymore, and I don't recall that the wording had more than a few seconds' thought put into it, but I can totally see what you mean about it.

I'm... very confused as to how you concluded that the wording was the issue here?

(Though, again: I've got no horse in this race. I run on the mac, and command-Q quite nicely quits without pestering me with a prompt, as does closing the game window if I'm not running in fullscreen. Now if only there was a way to more efficiently delete multiple saves in-game...)

I feel like that's pretty clearly talking about the "Really exit?" wording of the prompt which induced those specific feelings. I'm not saying this is, like, a major issue (or maybe even an issue), but since the "fix" required about 10 seconds of my time - significantly less than posting in this thread! - it seemed worthwhile. And, FWIW, I think not having a confirmation prompt would just straight up not be a good idea.

Been playing Warhammer 40K: Gladius lately and really appreciated how hitting Exit Game instantly closed the game.

I didn't realize how bothersome being asked if I'm "sure" I want to leave a game was, until I encountered games that just simply closed when I told them to. It was such a breath of fresh air it left me wondering why all games didn't do it.
