Exploration fleet tips?
« on: July 04, 2023, 01:47:30 PM »

I am somewhat new to this game (4 weeks give or take) , and more often than not run with the explorer start, explore a bit, get to an outer system for surveying/scavenging/exploring missions, get jumped by a pirate fleet right out the warp gate that's like thrice my size, inevitably lose. Any reliable ships that would do well in a exploration fleet?

Burn speed, sensor strength, and signature radius are really good on the campaign map. Pause as needed to get your surroundings, use Burn Drive if it looks like you can't get out, and militarize your civilian ships if they're slowing you down and making you an easy target to spot.

Everything Void Ganymede mentioned. Also, consider carrying a couple backup story points for when you are in a tough spot and need to disengage.

I don't play with any faction mods, but if you are very new to this game then I suggest you try the vanilla experience first before adding any mods (and especially faction mods) on top.

What kind of pirate fleet are you getting defeated by? Are we talking about a few frigates, or an entire Pirate Armada?

I used to play with a similar style to you, so I can definitely provide some ship suggestions once I know how big of a pirate problem you're trying to tackle.  ;D

Ok, so if this happens to you the instant you leave Corvus, you need to avoid this battle. But if you have a chance to visit Hybrasil before you start your explorations, you'll usually find something there to get your Apogee to a state where you can at least fight off a few pirate cruisers.

For your Large Energy, you want something like a Plasma Cannon, Tachyon Lance, Autopulse Laser or at least a High Intensity Laser. For the Large Missile, see if you can nab a Squall MLRS, Hurricane MIRV Launcher or a Locust SRM Launcher.

By visiting Hybrasil, you're also more likely to get a frigate that can punch above its weight class, such as the Scarab or the Omen.

If you're willing to do a few missions to build up capital before you go out exploring, you can also save up enough for an Aurora, after which all your problems should be gone, at least until you have to fight multiple capitals.

If you're flying over an unexplored system in hyperspace and suddenly get messages about missions and bounties and the like, the system has an active Comms unit. Which means it's occupied by either Pathers or Pirates. Avoid exploring such systems if you're not confident you can either defeat or evade the expected fleets you'll encounter in there.

The exit side of a slipstream can have a hostile fleet waiting to ambush unsuspecting explorers. Leave a stream early if you're not in a position to pick a fight, and if you're flying by one be weary if there's a fleet nearby. Having good sensor strength and sensor profile numbers will allow you to detect such fleets from further away, and only be detected from further away in turn.

Distress signals have a chance of spawning disproportionally gigantic pirate fleets instead of someone in need of help, so be weary of answering such calls unless you're able to defeat multiple armadas. There is a chance you'll be warned before jumping into the system, but this is not guaranteed.

Independent salvaging fleets you see flying around aren't necessarily above taking the Pledge of Piracy and creating their own salvage to, well, salvage. Just be careful about going after stragglers if you defeat such a fleet, because if they take the Pledge of Neutrality after being beaten they'll be considered a regular Independent fleet again, and attacking them will tick off the Independents faction. (I actually don't recall encountering any of these since 0.96, but with the changes to Insulated Engine Assembly my stealth fleet might have something to do with that ;D)

Another option you could consider is to turn your Apogee into a strike vessel.

If you manage to get your hands on a Plasma Cannon and some AM Blasters, you could also add Safety Overrides on your Apogee and dance death around those pesky pirates.

One of the biggest things is to simply not fight fleets you cannot take.

One way to do this is spend a story point

Another way to do this is turn off your transponder and/or go dark. If you’re not in a core system no one cares that your transponder is off (and only pirates will attempt to attack you with your transponder off in hyperspace.

It's hard to give solid advice without knowing what your skills are(i.e. Industry tree and Navigation/Sensors makes exploration a lot easier) and what your approach to the game is. Some people will survey every planet in the game, others will only check the most promising systems(yellow/orange stars) and black holes/neutron stars for Research Stations.
