I don't see how registering to be able to use their service would be any kind of inconvenience. Especially since that might protect mod authors and their work. ???
protect from what?
Downloading their work?

Unlicensed use for example. It happening could not be prevented, but you might be able to take legal action when their email address can be used to trace them.

That's not really even a vaguely believable reason. One reason they force people to make accounts is so they can tie data collection more easily and sell it, and another reason is because it's part of their site features monetization pipeline.

No need to make up excuses about security or safety when the answer is just that they're trying to make money. Not every company has a business model of creating problems to sell solutions or selling user data, it is unfortunate but nexus mods has been in that business for a long time now.

I put my small TechMining mod up on Nexus, since they scan all their mod submissions before allowing download. I paid for lifetime premium membership back in the day, since I felt that it was good to support a centralized search location and that it was way safer for users than downloading from a bunch of potentially sketchy google drive links.

(I got tired of the Nexus author drama - eventually it turned the “I don’t care” light on and I moved on from the modding author discords. It got incredibly toxic.)

Any rate, reading the comments here: should I also offer a google drive link, as well as the Nexus? And get my small mod added to the list of mods?
