How to put ships in reserve ?

How can I put ships in reserve so I don't have to use them in battle ?

You never have to use a ship in a battle, unless the size of the engagement is too small. Just don't deploy it.

That is my problem. In the campaign mode my ships simply spawn on the map without asking me which one to deploy. I know there is a way to put them in "reserve" or something. Or maybe I am wrong ?

Once your fleet is large enough you have the option to deploy specific ships, otherwise "The engagement is too small for any greater strategic importance"

Oh yeah, now when I have a bigger fleet it asks me which ship to deploy. Thanks for the support.

When you don't have a fleet big enough to start proper engagements, leave some of your ships uncrewed. The ones you don't want to get caught in fights, move them as close to the bottom right of the fleet window as you can and then run short on crew. Uncrewed ships won't go into battle, obviously. However, if you have to pull a hasty retreat for any reason, don't expect to be keeping those uncrewed ships either.
