Dark Mirror Fleet Encounter
« on: March 16, 2024, 10:54:55 PM »

As a strange encounter in the dark, perhaps that familiar sensor echo that is exactly the same size as your fleet, but it finally catches you with a horrifying shriek and it is in fact an exact copy of you and your fleet. Every enemy ship that would get destroyed phases away with a giggle instead of exploding. The music is Wrong. There is no salvage.

honestly, I think this kind of horror is what's being hinted at in the game, though not with so much malice, so it's not a terrible idea-minus the shrieks and giggles lol.

In my headcanon, what's being insinuated is that travel through hyperspace (especially while using gates, presumably), is leaving some sort of half-formed echoes of the travelers, like shades of people and ships, and that it's a moral conundrum because they're in pain or something

Less haunted house more haunting ennui. Noted.

In the salvage, you find... a time displaced copy of one of your officers, with different skills and personality.

it's also hinted that hyperspace allows for time travel. As you find many ships out there with desynchronised dates on their computers. Including the secret Remnant and secret animate floating husk encounter.

So, it'd be funny if you accidentally found two fleets from the AI Wars fighting each other. Tri-Tachyon and Hegemony at their peaks. With even XIV Legions being present. But before you reach them, they disappear.

But that could be too unsubtle.

Hmm. Hyperspace is "not completely understood" in Starsector but it doesn't seem to me be the stuff of nightmares, a la The Warp in Waharmmer 40k. Dark mirror fleets would seem (to me) more on the edge of supernatural phenomena or some kind of malicious intent, which I don't think hyperspace in the game insinuates. Now, the Abyss definitely makes you believe that there are stranger things in the Sector than previously thought. "Here be dragons" and all that. I think that kind of mystery is good but anything that appears to be specifically tailored to spook you (and you in particular) feels like a bridge too far.

Time-shenanigans is interesting though. I think one of the more interesting wrinkles the game could throw at you is a fleet (maybe just a single ship) that has knowledge from outside the Sector. I.e., a current Domain ship. Maybe it's a scouting party as to why the Persean Sector's Gate system crashed. It just took them a long time to get there on conventional drives. Maybe it's stragglers from an interstellar war that the Domain lost. Maybe aliens invaded. Who's to say that the whole Persean Sector isn't like the Sentinel group cut off and making due with decaying technology for centuries, just at a larger scale?

I have some ideas but can't sprite worth a damn and the ideas imply really involved stuff which I've no clue how to even tackle.

Occasionally you get a sensor ghost that follows your fleet. Once it gets close, it reveals itself after a moment or two. Sometimes it's a remnant fleet full of dmods and sometimes it's a single ship which if you salvage it there is a short blurb about it making independent maneuvers despite being an unmanned derelict.

Dark Mirror fleets would be the perfect encounter in the endless Abyss surrounding the sector.

I always assumed the greatest threat in that space would be boredom and starvation. Kinda like the Backrooms until people started spamming monsters in there.

Get bored and starve? Lame, I can already do that IRL.

you know, you could be right, and that all the spooky stuff is just time travel, making my idea is nonsense. I guess you also have the classic Hyperion-derived "Ultra-AI is existing in an ethereal medium and you're infringing on it with you gate BS" idea (though in the books it was the opposite of infringement); anyway, I can't connect motes with time travel, so I maybe it has to be supported by some other spookier ***. I should go into rules and search for every mention of "hyperwaves", usually that's the most redactedest stuff.

This is necessarily true by physics alone. All FTL is time travel. Although finding desynchronized dates on computers isn't particularly exceptional. All you have to do to achieve this is travel at a significant fraction of c, so that relativistic time dilation will cause the clocks there to run slow.
