Piranha are truly excellent as long as you give them a little escort. Even if you don't, two to three massed wings have enough swarmer firepower to ward off most ships.

The Broadsword is (at least imo) a complete waste of space. If you are going to spend 6 points on a ship to take down shields, go with a wolf or Tempest if you have the cash. They are far more capable and the Tempest is faster to boot. If you want them as interceptors, buy some wasps. Oh, and if you field either don't go up against the tri-tachs unless you have plenty of other PD ships - wasps will eat either for breakfast.

The Tri-Tachs do eat Broadswords pretty quickly. But against anything else, one Broadsword squad will chew up shields much quicker than a Tempest or Wolf will, while having a better time against other interceptors. The sheer volume of kinetic firepower and their circling behavior mean they last an awfully long time, even against flak, and add a sizable amount of damage. Most overloads I've inflicted on capital ships have come as a result of Broadsword harassment.

In my experience, Piranahs tend to get chewed up much faster than Broadswords. So I gave up on them. So I'd have to say Broadswords are better.

Besides their high survival rate, they do a very good job at suppressing enemy fighter wings with missiles and machineguns and can cause a fair bit of distress to a frigate.

The broadswords are capable of a wider variety of things, but all it takes is one wing of P's slipping through your defenses to completely turn the tide of a fight, not something a broadsword wing can do.

Want to know something about this game? There are so many different playstyles and things are well enough balanced that we can have threads like this where the opinions is mixed for valid reasons. I'm changing my answer: experiment with both and see which suits you :D

Broadswords tend to do better in smaller numbers than Piranhas.. but enmasse.. Piranhas will kill ANYTHING and everything..

2-3 bomber wings and it's just too many bombs..

An Onslaught with flak for point defense can destroy all the bombs before they get close even from 2-3 wings at once.

I like a good mix but I find that my piranhas die far sooner than my broadswords simply due to their habit of following the bombs all the way to the ship and over it as opposed to turning around once they drop their payload.  I personally prefer torpedo bombers to piranhas and xyphos to broadswords anyway.

That would be a really nice thing to have changed.

You won't be able to refit fighters and bombers at all. They're designed/balanced around having a particular set of weapons and would be very broken if you could change it. Which ones you pick for your fleet -out of quite a few that are available- is the choice here, not how they're outfitted.

Piranah's are incredibly effective against cruisers and capital ships, but rubbish otherwise.  Broadswords are just better in general.

If i had to pick between the two it would really come down to what im facing anything bigger than a cruiser and im going with the bombers anything smaller gets broadswords although i rarely use broadswords, THUNDER is where its at :D that single harpoon when in anymore than a single wing of fighters devastates like nobodies business and once shields go down the ion cannons just take everything offline :D

Also I totally had the name BEFORE the cruiser.

personaly i find both to be good i have 8 wings of each in my fleet + 8 wings of dagger bomber wings(my personal fav :) ) 7 wings of thunder wings and a *** load(think 14-16) of wasp wings + 4 carriors kill anything and everything it dont mater what it is its going to die in 1 pass to my fleet even a paragon wont last long to them o and all wings have elite crew that is what makes the difference between survival and loss !  :-\ though i do have a bloody long and expensive repair time when alot of my ships go and keel over and thay dont repair in the fight also the fact that wasp wings dont repair out of fight(properly) and drain my supplys is a S.O.A.B. also

I'd take broadswords with elite pilots TBH. They are very good and useful whereas piranhas are only useful against larger ships and only in large number.

BRB, going to go test a Dominator covered in frag bombs. Maybe an Onslaught as well?

I haven't done it with a dominator, its to slow in my opinion, but a lasher covered in frag bombs with the right engine mods, to make you go faster nothing stands in your way, due to the massive amounts of bombs flying at the ship.
