Welcome to the tempest :D I think you'd have a harder time against the tri-tachyon - they field their own tempests and medusas, both of which are best in class (imo).

This is partly due to the fact that turrets don't swivel instantly, but I also don't think the AI leads its shots. Its not particularly hard to write a first order (only taking into account velocities) targeting formula based on self/target vectors and weapon speed that gives back time to impact and impact location; the AI can then just aim for the impact spot. The same formula would also allow for actually intercepting on the main map rather than simply tailing. It would also tell you if you cannot catch someone (intercept time unbounded). That said changing directions would still fool the targeting as it does not take acceleration into account, but it would be better.
