The time has come to cast your vote! Was 0.7 worth the wait?
« on: December 10, 2015, 05:55:04 PM »

It has taken around one year but 0.7 has brought us the sensor system, the beginnings of faction politics, expanded battles and a smattering of new ships and weapons. Has the content of 0.7 justified the long development cycle to you? Do you feel that 0.7 was yet another "foundations" patch and now that it has been laid down development speed will greatly increase? Or do you have the patients of a saint and couldn't care less?

I'm conflicted. I don't think there is anywhere near enough content to justify a full year, and yet, what is there is so good. Just enough good content comes out each patch to make me want to start fresh again, and after months of not playing the game, I get a bit of that "first time WOW" once again.

Would I want Starsector to be developed faster? Of course.

Is me wanting Starsector to come out faster going to matter? Not at all.

There are a ton more 'foundations' to be added, it's really when Alex thinks that there are enough base level systems to start generating a ton of content. I get the feeling that 1.0 will not actually be 1.0, given the massive laundry list of things that are not yet in the game, such as the skill rework, larger/scrollable campaign map, outposts, industry tree, more defined personal relations, etc.

When there isn't new stuff, and I feel I've played the game to death, I just put it down. I've put in a number of hours into, and for a $15 game, it's been very good value. The patches don't cost me anything more.

I hope I am still alive when the game is finally released with all core features implemented. **cough** :D But even it's half completed there is still quite a lot of fun in it. I am very happy with the current state of the the game.

Pretty much every Starsector update is worth the wait.

Pretty much every Starsector update is worth the wait.

Yeah they all add enough that it is worth having another good go at, and everything (at least for the bugfix and point releases immediately after the main release) works well enough that there is actually a game worth playing.

Couple that with a large (ever-changing) number of mods...  ;D

Yup, because the quality of each update is outstanding. The new features check off a lot of the game goals. The small improvements in ship balance and combat AI also go a long way: the "ten second gameplay" in combat that gets players to fight over and over and not get bored is getting very smooth.

There are still some of the same old issues: inverted difficulty curve and nothing for high end fleets to do. But both of those got a little better this update, and now the skeletons are in place for a heck of a lot more stuff.

Of course I would like the game to be complete and out tomorrow, but given the option of Alex rushing (ie making Nexerelin the standard and pushing it out the door, and lets be honest SS + Nexerelin is already better than a lot of games...) and Alex giving us yet more well thought out and polished mechanics, I'll choose the latter.

Each updates take something like an year or so. I could've spent years searching for a game of that quality and not finding it.
So, yeah, I'd say it's all worth it.

this is really it for me, i've put hundreds of hours into the game in various patches, far more than i've put into several games that cost 60$ put together. the patch was a little bumpy, but now that the mods have filled out again there's plenty to do. the additional systems like sensors etc are necessary to make a compelling strategy layer in the long run, i'm happy with how they turned out.

Every update feels like a whole new game. starting over in the wolf after each update, makes it feel like the first day when i bought the game. though the combat stays the same - there are just different things to shoot at and i have to re learn how to control my ship. But that's still good, as the combat in this game is great and very well done! Eventually i burn myself out playing the game, and after playing around with mods for long enough i give the game a rest for a while. currently caught between the vanilla and mod phase ;)

Absolutely, the amount of features that got added in 0.7.X was worth it, I echo the sentiments of most others here, would i like it to be done 100% right now? damn right, but would i want Alex to rush his work? Not even slightly.

Also given the amount of hours i've put into this game, either here on the forums or actually playing... well there are few games that hold my attention so.

When you can't go on, just accept your doom. It comes to all, it is inevitable.

Also I totally had the name BEFORE the cruiser.

First I generally like most of thing in update, and really like the game as a whole. But when you put time and how long a update takes, than no, its not worth the wait, as the update has to little content compared for how long it took to be released. The speed of development is going extremely slow for this game, but at least it's slowly moving and mostly in good direction.
