General Discussion / Re: Help me, I'm a newb!
« on: December 14, 2015, 02:09:32 PM »
I don't recommend replacing the pulse laser with a heavy blaster for new players. For new players, the most important thing is to gain experience of  playing around as much of everything as you can and you can't really do that so effectively with the heavy blaster as it so suprisingly affects the wolf's flux. If you choose trader or smuggler, make sure you have at least speed 200 so you can always choose to run away from fights safely. You need to goto a base and choose to refit your ship and give it either the Safety Overides and/or Unstable Injector Hullmods. Also, i recommend not to follow Zenstratta's recommendations. there's a lot of interesting way to play and it is best to explore, rather than to follow one person's preconception.

I am struggling to earn any money! Bounty hunter is hard and I stand no chance with pirates so I thought trading is the way to go but still trying to figure things out. Any tips?

Also even in Hyperspace there are pirates that catches up to me and eventually I won't last. The start seems quite difficult in my opinion but I am a n00b.

I came to Starsector as it resembles Escape Velocity series and that was great experience back in the days :)

The thing is what I would do in the Escape Velocity series is just ferry passengers and trade until I have enough cash. I'm still trying to figure out the trade in this game and trying to escape the pirates at the same time.

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated! I have googled guides but there doesn't seem to be anything that helps.
Bounty hunting at the start of the game requires burn speed 10 so you can chase and run away from other fleets. Don't use other ships till you get used to both. If you get chased or want to chase, there is a boost button and with burn speed 10, you should never be caught. In starsector, you can't repeatedly do mundane treading brainlessly to "level" up as easily. You have use exploit events. Though usually one of the Barad moons usually sell ore at rock bottom prices that you can repeatedly sell to jangala, but even then you will need to avoid pirates and turn on and off your transponder or avoid fleets. I think your main problem is that you are approaching the game as if it is a clone of another game, rather than a game with its own unique gameplay.

Gezzaman, perhaps you should direct that suggestion to the relevent mod?

I think the "official" explanation is that your crew consist of the most drunkest people you can find who simply can't resist telling everyone all your secrets.
It'll be nice if these sort of game mechanics was explained somewhere in the codex.

They are both interesting ways to play. I wouldn't call it a non standard way to play. As the starting state, i considered it to be the default state to play. I've never seen a combat Capital ship on the black market. All I ever seem to see are Auroras. And a Dominator one time.

thanks for another useful and balanced mission David!

Spoiler
CC for when the image host gets shut down: a screencap of a contact with David's avatar offering a procurement mission for 10,000 units of heavy machinery to be completed in 20 days

I've had harvested organ mission for less than 200. Makes you wonder.

I wish there was a burn speed 10 tanker. Right now, there doesn't seem to be a reason to choose Dram over Phaeton.

Yeah, it's old lore from the game's former writer Ivaylo, not reflected in the game proper. I'm not sure if it can even be considered canon anymore.

Back then it was:

Mastery-epoch = low-tech
Core-epoch = midline
Expansion-epoch = high-tech

But for example the Gryphon, which is visually a midline design, is now described as being used just before the Gates collapsed, which would put it in the Expansion-epoch. I don't know if that's a mistake or if David is throwing those old concepts over board.

Thanks.

How does that work out? I have never come across low tech ships being refered to as such in the game anywhere before.

Possible. Are there any Mastery Epoch vessel has a large missile mount? I can recall none.
What is a Mastery Epoch vessel? that's not a phrase I have seen before here.

I love how the opening poster is obviously talking about an unmodded version of the game and half of you guys are posting up ships from mods or with non-vanilla weapons.

Anyways there's something funny about an Afflictor with 4 reapers with missile specialisation 10 and 2 engine hullmods. Unphase, shoot, collect bounty.

Might be more than that, I also have found big missiles to be extremely rare. In my 7.1 playthrough I have seen three in total, and that is while actively looking for them and having access to the Heg military markets from early on.
I found 7 MIRV in the first miltary market I looked (Port Franchise #3). Maybe Hegemony just doesn't have very many large missiles on offer or I am just lucky.

I think some of you are paying too much attention to the battlecruiser designation. It's a Capital type class with the burn speed of other capitals and that is what is should be compared to, rather than some specific misunderstood doctrine of the early 20th century of the British navy.

It's a fun and interesting ship to pilot. The AI using it, not so much. It's pretty much a player ship much in the same vein as several other ships.

There should be hundreds of faceless spacemen. One of every colour, every style of helmet. Who needs personality for your character anyways?

Suggestions / Re: Starter Loans
« on: December 09, 2015, 05:54:04 AM »
Now we know the soruces of all of these organs.

The problem I find with being able to take on loans is that it would simply be counter to normal gameplay. Unlike in real life, taking a loan at the start of a game is essentially risk free as the essence these sort of games are made to reliably be able to provide a good return on an investment of any sort. Start the game and see an attractive mssion? Take a loan, complete the mission and pay back the loan and be happy with almost an instant 10k. A bounty? No need to earn money, when you can just buy several ships and get the bounty before returning it. Ruins the idea of having to work your way up to larger missions.. It would also wouldn't the alleviate the problem of a new player not knowing what they are doing.

New players have plenty of breathing room anyways. You die, you start again in a new ship with all the money and skills you had before.
