Alex, these lasts several blog posts have got my hype pumped, not to mention the forum and Twitter activity. I've been lurking increasingly heavily as the buildup to the new release drops, and I don't think I've been as excited for an update since we got our first glimpse of Corvus. At this point, most all of the nitpicks I've had about features or changes in the past have proven to be good game design decisions in the larger scope of the final product. It's refreshing to take a step back in this age of early access and community involvement, and just enjoy watching an artisan at his craft. Following the development of Starfarer *ahem* Starsector, has felt like watching one of the old masters work a mammoth monolith of stone. The true form of the work being slowly revealed as the stock is carved away, the contours expressing themselves first as roughly hewn geometry, only later resolving into the flowing and lifelike form of a genuinely inspired piece.

All that tripe aside, looking forward to playing the new build. When its ready, of course.

I just started getting freezes, in a way I've never encountered before. I don't know if it's Nexerelin, but it seems related at the least.

I had just finished refitting a few ships in my fleet at one of the worlds controlled by my player faction, and on leaving the planet the game froze completely within about 5 seconds. Now the same thing happens any time I load my save.

The game starts up fine, and my save loads fine. The game starts paused as normal, and everything appears to work. I can open the console, interact with any menus I want, dock with the planet and conduct transactions, etc without issue. However, as soon as I unpause the campaign level, the game will run for a few seconds before simply locking up again. It doesn't CTD or anything, just becomes unresponsive and I end up having to force close it. During this time it doesn't appear that any new lines are being added to the log, and I've re-loaded a handful of times with the log always looking similar. Here's the last bit of the log. Some things are different each time, like target faction, what planets are getting the bounty probability update, etc, but beyond that it looks similar. So I guess the freeze is occurring during an update of Nexerelin related campaign features.

Is there a basic guide anywhere on setting up a custom followers faction? Editing the info for names, titles, etc is pretty straightforward. It's getting them configured to use specific faction techs or ships in their fleets that I'm not confident with. How configurable is the followers faction currently in this regard? Can I force them to use a specific mod factions ships and tech, what about a mix of more than one mod faction? I know ship "class" makeup used to be configurable, e.g. how many large vs small ships appears in the average fleet etc. Any info would be great.

I think you need to try deleting, and re-extracting a fresh copy of the Neutrino directory. Don't just copy over.

I have been fighting them with a mostly dassault ship fleet . any help.

I've been getting this error on occasion as well, but I haven't been able to reproduce it reliably. Opening up the NeutTractorbeamEffect.java file shows this on line 35

I rarely field dedicated PD ships, but it's also a strategy I haven't put much effort into developing.

Early game, I really like having a Shepherd escort with a Swarmer to provide PD escort to weaker destroyers or mount starved frigates. Mid to late game, I'm usually cramming as much PD as I can onto ships because fighters start to become much more prevalent, and you just can't be safe without it.

I've been meaning to try getting some 4-frigate PD groups together as cruiser or capital ship escorts, but my recent campaigns have been based on running whatever I can salvage or find at the time which has meant a lot of mishmash fleets and sub-par weapons loadouts. I'm just getting to the point in my current game where I can start building some more "hand crafted" fleets.

Honestly, I'd like to see the ranges of most weapons in game increased by as much as 50-100% combined with the ability to zoom out a little farther in the battle screen. It would be easier to space ships out in sensible formations and establish overlapping fields of fire which would increase the strategy element a little. Don't know how it would actually play out, but I might have to try my hand at putting a mod together to put this to the test.

No, no they shouldn't.  Severe damage, maybe, or if they have any damage and there are no hostiles within their engagement range, then sure.

But having them re-dock on any damage would unduly cripple keeping interceptors around to supplement point defense, or using any fighters on a ship that's capable of getting in close and brawling.


Sure, but this was addressed in the original post with the idea of a damage threshold based on remaining Hull HP. I didn't see the need to reiterate, though I suppose I should have for clarity.

Great work Helmut, I hope someone integrates these into the game with the new multi-part ship mechanics.

Back in the Corvus days, stumbling on a roaming relic was one of the greater challenges available, and a lot of fun. Not to mention the chance of capturing one.

I'm under the impression that the Codex is already on the list for an overhaul, but it hasn't been a priority in the recent releases. Expect to see it re-imagined in coming releases.

Good incentive not to drop out of hyperspace in a suns gravity well, and if you do to get out of it as soon as possible.

That said, I would like to see coronas have a pronounced gradient, with a minor effect on the outer fringes that increases in intensity the closer you get to the star. Maybe a better UI indicator for terrain effects as well, so you can have a real-time idea of the per day cost of whatever is being inflicted on your ships.

This is one of a handful of minor issues with the campaign level AI. I'm guessing these mechanics just haven't had a proper development pass in a while, and will be expanded on and improved in coming patches to accommodate new content that will require more options.

I think this could work out alright if introduced with a mechanic that allowed for third parties in a battle, but only when dealing with factions that are "neutral" to you. Friendlies will always assist. Life or death is more important than bounties, if there's competition all the more reason to risk a more aggressive approach. The third party could register as neutral, but inflicting a certain level of damage on their ships during the course of battle could flip them to hostile and result in a three-way mess.

I know I would like battles in the campaign to play out a little less... linearly, and this might contribute to that.

I'm all for expanding the tether a little bit on some things, but at the same time some wings that you want to stay close (like PD wings, such as the mining pod) wander too far even when set to recall, and you lose the PD coverage they afford in the first place while they get popped like balloons by a PD frigate. How do you control that without adding additional fighter control mechanics?

I'm not sure what the big hubbub is for achieving some kind of hypothetical perfect balance is in a game for one. Some things should just be better than others in my opinion. Make them harder to find maybe, or more expensive, but that's part of the joy of an open world single player game. Finding things that are just better than what you're using is part of the fun. Losing them when your carefully fitted ship with excruciatingly sourced wings and weapons is also part of it.
