Excuse me if my question would qualify as offtopic here but I couldn't think of a better place since the question is exactly about 0.9.
I have been away from Starsector for a year or two so I started to forget technical details, but I vaguely remember one had to download some 3rd party software (I think it was Java) and dump it to Starsector folder in order for it to run without freezes, especially with a large amount of mods. Is it still the case for 0.9, or all I need to do is install new distributive and I'm good to go?

Is it possible now to set course to a random (empty) point in system map?

Sorry, I have absolutely no idea what you are babbling about. Are you talking about the same game now?
Considering that more experienced and established members have long since answered the question and apparently had no problem understanding what the OP was asking, I would seriously recommend reconsidering who exactly was "babbling" here.

Not looking for spoilers, just strengths/weaknesses.
Trying to be as non-spoilerish as I can.

One thing I found utterly disgusting: they make a new character who is named almost identically as an old, established character was named, and coincidentally this new character was doing storywise the same thing that original character did, but obviously in a different way. This shows to me that Disney is firmly set in destroying old universe not only by overwriting story arks but also by re-using old character names to further erase them from existence, much like the old christians did with pre-christianity deities, stories and holidays. Also, I wouldn't care much if they screw some trippy yuuzhan-vongs that were dumb and contrived anyway, but to do the same with a character I loved and knew ever since 1995 - that's an utter outrage.

Another thing mildly revolting is the way they crammed in all that pompous dialogues about "hope, blahblah, duty, yadayada, reasons and decisions, blahblah some more", they're extremely cringeworthy and even more annoying as I remember how great original trilogy turned out without that sh*it at all! Can you imagine Luke disrupting pre-flight routine to stand in some dumb heroic pose and preach about "we were destined to preserve the hope that lead us all to better mankind who are destined to deserve more hope and love and friendship and fuc*king butterflies"? Utterly lame.

With that rant said, there was things I loved: space battle was pleasant, X-wings and Y-wings worked reasonably executing usual battle tactics I would have expected from them playing Tie-Fighter back in 1994, they even exploited that Star Destroyer's vulnerability exactly how I would've done it myself driving my trusty interceptor against one. Loved that. Pathetic lack of turbolasers on capital ships and inter-capital ship fire exchange was quite disappointing though.

Really loved how they tied the end of Rogue 1 to New Hope too!

All in all, there is no doubt that is not anymore original trilogy we loved, but as soon as we accept and embrace it, the new movies are rather acceptable chew for when you just want to went to the cinema to watch some random movie. Not worse than that Marvel superhero conveyor line anyway.

P.S. There's now swearing filter on this board? Did someone finally thought of the children or what? :-\

And whether you savescum or summon the ship via console, you are not playing the way you were meant to be in either case, you are playing the way you want to.
I don't understand, why does people say it as if it is anything bad? Really, you think it's valid point saying I should play as somebody else (dev) wanted me to play, or else I am cheating? The hell? Next time when some developers would want people to play standing on one feet singing Michael Jackson, you will say "eh, if that's how they meant us to play" instead of "screw you, I have better idea"? What any game really is is a set of rules wrapped in a pretty graphics. Devs give you the set of rules, and you try it with all your wit to bend it, to squeeze what you want and get what you could without breaking the rules, that's what is a game - a war between a rules given by the devs and the wits of the player. And if devs by shortsightedness or any reason leave a loopholes between the rules, that's their fault, at that point they lost the war, and the player, clever enough to saw these loopholes, won a war. How hard it is to understand?

rejecting the game's RNG over and over until you get what you want even though it's a .0000001 chance is basically cheating,
cheating isn't wrong as long as the game is singleplayer and the boarding mechanics are legit awful so why not save the time and just spawn the ship anyway, there's no real difference.
I see you point, let's just say that my code of honour says otherwise. Using functionality not in the game (hexedit) or not readily available to the player (dev console) is cheating, while using functionality available to the average player is not cheating no matter how many times you used it, 1, 10 or 100. Also, what about sense of achievement? I finally beat Salamander from the game after 30 attempts, and now I feel good, like "stuff you, game, see, I'm on the top, not you!". Would I feel it by spawning it from the console?

Hmm... after careful consideration, boarding mechanic is ok. It did gave me feeling of satisfaction after all, no? ::)

9
why not just spawn the ship if you are going to obsessively save scum

both are cheating anyway
I believe you might need to check what is cheating. Hint: a legit part of the game is not.

but I'd be interested in hearing this without using the word "fun"
As someone who just wasted whole hour mind-numbingly, loathingly replaying for like 20 times the same combat I grew to hate to the core again and again because this combat is the only, unique source for me to get certain ship in the game (Salamander & Undine in my case) I find it incredibly difficult to define what's broken in current boarding mechanics without using a word "fun", or, rather, "absolutely not fun".

I do have some other simple suggestions that I think would be easy to implement and would enhance the game.
Dream on :) I have been asking for a time acceleration toggle, instead of constantly holding a key until the finger literally in pain after pressing the damn shift for an hour straight, since bloody 2013! :P

You want vanilla skills? If you need this that here archive. I have made it for myself. I don't like skills of it fashion.

Thank you for the link DrakonST! Vanilla skills is not exactly what I am after, what I want is to modify percentages of some skills, like turning 1% each Computer Systems level adds to my OP into 2% and so on. Hopefully I would be able to understand what you did by comparing your archive with original SS+, but if you could give me more direct hint, that would be really cool! :)

This is another evening wasted in a futile attempts to modify skill/aptitude parameters within SS+, so at this point I would really appreciate any pointers. What file(s) should I extract/modify/erase from SSP.jar so that the game finally notice my changes? I am trying to change Computer Systems for the sake of example.

I have asked this question year ago, and with the help of others I was able to do the same, but that was at the time of SS+ 2.10 version, and apparently logic beyond file structure in SSP.jar has been changed with versions so that solution doesn't work anymore.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough: Further encouragement of the abuse of IP without permission will not be tolerated on this forum.
I'm sorry Tartiflette, apparently I'm not allowed to reply to you seeing as I'm too lazy to create new account ::)

That's not your call to make.
But only because I don't know how to mod Starsector. At any rate, this is my opinion to voice.

This is about intellectual property
Umm, screw the intellectual property? The most disgusting, ugly, culturally and recreationally damaging institution modern capitalism created. I fully understand why Disney clings to it, making half of the world bend to keep their fleeting control over almost century old franchise, but why do you?

and once you start going down the road of ignoring mod authors' expressed wishes on how their mods are to be handled you risk losing a lot of future content.
It is my sincere beliefhope that majority of the mod authors are doing what they do for the joy of creation, for the desire to have a better gaming experience and to share it with others. I really doubt there's many authors creating mods for the sake of having common people to kiss them in the ass, and if there's some, well, we're better off without their mods.
