Suggestions / Mission Folders
« on: August 31, 2011, 12:15:30 PM »
While it may not be all that necessary right now, in the future, it would be nice to be able to organize missions into different folders.

For example, when you click the Missions button on the main menu, instead of being presented with a list of all available missions, you'd be presented with a list of different folders that contain those missions. From there, you could choose to enter the "Default Missions" folder, or the "Uncategorized Missions" folder, or the "superroflolmod3 missions." You get the idea.

I figure it would just be easier than having to scroll through a list of a hundred+ missions at some point in the future.

Thanks :)

I took an hour or so an hammered out the Morningstar:

Download all the relevant files here: http://www.mediafire.com/?votsp53a6poo4gk

Note: This isn't set up as a mod. It's intended to be put into an existing one.

Another note: The loadout\stats I've given the ship are obviously just there to serve as loose defaults. Feel free to modify it in any way.

Also, an offer: I'm willing to render off anyone's 3D models as sprites, so long as I don't get swamped with requests (But I doubt I will.). I'll even go over them in photoshop and make them look pretty if you want. But there's one condition: If I make you a ship, it'll be free for others to use, just like everything else in this thread. I just came over here from the Homeworld 2 modding community, and they all had iron grips on their creations. I'd hate to see a similar community arise in Starfarer, as it grows in popularity.

Suggestions / Re: Battle chatter
« on: August 29, 2011, 08:18:55 AM »
I second this. However, I don't think battle chatter should be text-only. I think it would be best for the battle chatter to be voiced, with a text notification of what ship is saying it. Reason being is that when you're in the heat of combat, taking your eyes away for even a second to read a line or two of text on the edge of the screen could screw you over. With voiced battle chatter, you could hear somebody scream, "We're gettin' our asses kicked over here!" and you know right away that your ships are in trouble.

Alternatively, auditory battle notifications could be easily accomplished without getting voice actors to do a ton of battle chatter. You'd just need to have something like an adviser from any generic RTS game. You know, the person who says "You must construct additional pylons." In Starfarer, he could tell you things like when your forces are under attack, when you or the enemy capture an objective, or maybe when one of your powerful ships is taking critical damage.

Or, an alternative to an alternative, one which requires no voice actors and no money, is the addition of little blips and beeps or other sounds. When a ship of yours comes under attack, you could play a little, non-intrusive beeping noise that accompanies a text message saying "ISS Herpderp is receiving fire," and then you could play a very intrusive beeping noise when you get the message "ISS Herpderp destroyed." You get the idea.

Update: compiled all my stuff over time back into this thread. Now it actually doesn't suck.

Figured I'd make some starscapes. They both look decent ingame, and don't obstruct anything.

Milky Way Skybox:

This came as a result of testing out Space Engine's skybox exporting ability, which works fairly well, though they required a bit of editing.

So, this is a set of 5 backgrounds centered in a location on the other side of the Milky Way. Might not be the most dramatic backgrounds ever, but if realism is your thing, then these might be for you.

Awesome, worked perfectly!

I remember you said that "hints" had something to do with how AI handles stuff in another thread, so I figured I'd best leave that line alone for fear of horribly breaking something. :P

Modding / Missile Hardpoint Problem
« on: August 25, 2011, 04:40:24 PM »
Here's the deal: for my ship, I don't want visible missile turrets like most core ships have. Instead, the missile systems are internally housed. Though figuring out how to remove the turret and hardpoint sprites was obvious, I can't seem to remove the missile sprite itself. Let me show you:

You can see how there are two missile sprites just floating there, and they do that at all times.

Here's a closer look, I know it's a bit hard to see:

Is there a way that I can stop those errant missile sprites from rendering?

Or, an alternative, is there a way that I can make it render beneath the ship?

General Discussion / Re: Preorders and Sales
« on: August 23, 2011, 05:23:52 PM »
I just pre-ordered the game yesterday. Want to know what made me get it now? The mod support. Any developer that advertises mod support as a feature gets my money (as long as the game is worth modding, that is).
