Mods / Re: [0.7.1a] Starsector+ Vanilla Enhancement Mod 3.0.0

Ok, so how do I opt out of certain portraits being used in game? They're nice and all but some completely clash with vanilla style portraits, and I'd like things to fit. Anyone know which file/line of code I need to mess with to just omit a certain portrait?

EDIT: also I'd like to know how to do this with music too, as I installed the music version of SS+, then switched to the non music version, yet I'm still getting ambient mod music...

Great mod, but how hard is it to edit the names on anything, like ship or equipment? One of the weapons is simply named 'State'... not sure if it's a bug or what.

I'd be glad to do it myself if I knew where to look.

I guess firefox just isn't advanced enough to protect us from these fiendish hackers pretending to be starsector modders (sarcasm)

just stumbled on this, great looking ships. as someone else said, vanilla-grounded, and I'm a big fan of the vanilla look. would love to see these in the game now that it's been updated.

the mirror worked though.

thanks for the quick response!

Am I correct in thinking that the independents now offer commissions and go to war with factions? This makes them seem like they are another faction, not scattered independent ports. How hard would it be to implement independent market behavior for the independent faction? As in, Asharu is effectively its own little faction with its own reputation set, and your commission/faction wars with Asharu only pertain to Asharu and not Nortia or Maxios. If you still want it to effect general independent reputation, Asharu reputation could be averaged with all other independent market reputations, and that would be the +/- to independent reputation. So Asharu might be inhospitable regardless, but several other ports would have to be hostile too before all independent markets refused trade to the player.

Maybe it would be simpler to have independents behave like pirates with no commissions or faction wars.

I still think players should have room to break with a faction. Commissions seem to make you an official member of a faction, which makes me wonder why there are privateers in the game as privateers are basically hired pirates. Shouldn't there be some 'sneakier' way to work with a faction, via a temporary contract or something -- 4 to 8 months, still limited to one faction, still gaining rep and credits, but maybe not access to anything over favorable? Also, the ability to downgrade from a commission to a temporary contract would be great. A little rep loss (-10 or 20) and if you break the contract before it ends, faction goes inhospitable.

So glad to have found this thread, did not realize the patches were coming so rapidly. +1 for Faction rep changes!

Why remove rep decay? This seems like a good way to forgive/encourage experimentation by the player. Unless you read the forums religiously, you won't know all the rules about factions and relationships; neither do I think that the game should explicitly tell you all these things. Leaving it opaque is fine, but the decay is a mechanic to make sure it isn't too punishing.

I don't think it was actually doing that, though. So in my view it's more cleanup of stuff that's in there but, if we're being honest, that I've completely forgotten even existed. Not opposed to possibly bringing this back in some other form eventually, though.

Idea for 'repairing' bad rep: You go to the faction, open comm links, find an official, and 'offer your services'. You get a special smuggling, trading, or bounty event ('mission') which pays less based on how bad your rep is (0 if hostile). Upon success your rep with that individual gets a big +, and you can get more missions from them. When it's high enough they start 'lobbying' or putting in a good word for you. 'Your reputation with X faction has improved by Y due to your work with (Quartermaster Ericcson or w/e)'.

Consider also the ability to offer money, goods, a ship, an officer, etc. but they might turn those down and offering services seems like it should be the most reliable (if time intensive) way to build rep with individuals. If your rep with an individual is high enough, perhaps you could ask them 'how can I serve the hegemony / make amends / clear my record' and they offer you a really tough or unprofitable mission which has big impact with faction. They might ask you to do something which hurts your rep with a hostile faction. If you had to sneak into port to talk to them it has a nice little spy feel to it.

sidenote on the gryphon's ability: instead of only 1 use, you could give it a sizable cooldown that is multiplied by how many missiles it replaced. So first use is 'free' but if it replaced all the missiles, a very long cooldown. This might even make it easier on the AI as an 'early' use wouldn't get as much cooldown.

Re:
..

As Thaago said, get the latest version of the game. The investigation system was already entirely removed and replaced with a commission system, where you need to opt in to the faction soap operas. If you don't, they leave you alone.

sweet, my rant was completely unnecessary.

will this update break my save? do I need to start over

Found this thread by googling 'starsector endless investigations'. got back into this game after idk how long, because of the update. Generally avoiding black market stuff, playing a good character, completely confused about the constant investigations. So I read the thread a bit and realized the game is punishing me for putting in hard work with one faction, to access their toys and buy them with game money so I can play with them.. the game is trying to prevent me from playing it.

It's not in an immersive 'this is what happens in this world' kind of way. It's not in a fun 'here is a problem, now how do you solve it,' kind of way. It is just a bad idea having a bad effect. I honestly thought it was a bug at first; single digit reputations hits trained me to think one way, then all of a sudden, negative 66 from black market, you are at war, you have only 1 ship good luck. I fixed that with a quickload and 'don't do that again' but now I'm getting the same thing from investigations. The game is shunting the difficulty up in an unpredictable way, and from what I read here is impossible to backtrack, so apparently the time I spent is wasted.

I do not want to play multiple playthroughs to explore the game content, because in the process I'd have to tediously slog through content Ive already thoroughly explored. As someone else said, combat is -The Main Feature- and everything else revolves around it. I want to continuously explore new combinations of ships, weapons, upgrades, in new settings and against new opponents, in an immersive setting that engenders a story of how I explored it. And good job! A lot of that is implemented, or I wouldn't have spent so much time playing! But that is also what makes this one bit so frustrating -- the idea that the game is designed to force me to stop playing one part of it, or the other part of it, and especially in an irreversible way with no warning?

-----TL;DR----- using reputation hits or 'faction jealousy' to force players into one faction is like baking someone a feast and telling them to pick one kind of food and that's all they get. Bad idea! Please don't mutilate your beautiful game with this thinking.

I may just wait for a mod that unbreaks the game by removing or toning down this 'feature'. Too much realism turns it into something other than a game. If there were anything clear about how it's calculated I might suggest an alternative but in any case, making your game cut itself into pieces that the player can't play = making a self-breaking game

excellent, thank you. if you put up a 'current bug list: LOOK HERE FIRST' thread and pin it, it might save you some time.

Bug Reports & Support / Map and other tabs not working after battle
« on: November 02, 2014, 01:28:32 PM »
often after a battle, the map tab no longer works. it makes the sound and flashes when clicked/hotkeyed, but no map comes up. I have tried landing, reloading, exiting to main menu and loading, loading another game... only way to fix it seems to be to completely restart the game. game is essentially unplayable in this state unless I just follow other ships to various points.

after testing I tried clicking other tabs and they also didn't work, until I clicked one which brought up a campaign helper tip.... then after that was gone the tabs worked... so I'm wondering if the bug is simply preventing the tips from showing and that jams up the tabs until cleared
