only one problem, i suck at them  :-\

i made a poor as **** score on the third one only  ???

yes they do restock, from time to time you will get a message about this or that fleet coming to resupply the according station.
as long as you dont attack those resuppling fleet, there is restocking

General Discussion / Re: Question on general space travel
« on: July 16, 2012, 06:30:15 PM »
sadly jmdelrio, a game that would use "newtonian engines" as they are called would make for an overly complicated and boring game as travelling in space in reality is a very, very complex thing to do, and as such, to make a suscessful and enjoyable game, some measure of suspension of disbelief is required.

for the long story, star wars is actually qualified as a "space opera" and as such, technology takes the backseat and as for halo, human ship DO have maneuvering thrusters, you just dont see them (for a good reason, the game focus around our loving landlubber spartans)

you should be happy that starfarer has at least a little bit of newtonian physics because a lot of space games out there dont have any.

while it is old as hell, jovian chronicles was a good example. the game took full account of newtonian physics and as such, delta V, coasting, "going forward butt-first", fighter "strike rush", gravitational launch and all those other wonderful space maneuvers were in.

Suggestions / Free fight mode
« on: July 16, 2012, 06:15:58 PM »
A simple suggestion really.
there should be an easily accesible (no mod console or whatever) that simply allows the player to pick his ship and theire weapon and also do it for his opponent.
like the simulation option but on a bigger scale. it would allow people to test many things inside parameters they are comfortable with instead of having to deal with the missions or having to play story mode just so they can gather enough money to pay themselve the ship they want to toy with.

fighters is something i really have to try (with a carrier of course).
i cant get myself to fully thrust the AI by moment and because of that, fighters seemed like a waste of money.

General Discussion / Re: Ship Naming!
« on: July 16, 2012, 02:27:43 PM »
i like sharing my ship names.
while i havent set up any big naming convention (i will when the game is out for good).
right now i just put names that sits well with me.

right now, all ship have the ISS denomination as i find it classy (Independant StarShip) but that will change when the real game is out, ships will carry the Phyrexian StarShip (PSS)

as for ship names, i try to give them a little something with meaning. but sometime i just give them names i like or downright meaningless stuff when im out of idea

Names depend on ship models and not there class.
my two hounds have name reminescent of speed (Raptor and Thunderbolt)
my 3 lashers have names from stargate (Prometheus, Deadalus and Sun Tzu)
my hammerhead also has a name from stargate (Apollo)
my medusa dosent have any meaning (ISS Bola, like the weapon)
my eagle cruiser is named yet again after the lantian cruiser from stargate (ISS Orion)

i had a buffalo MK2 that i named ISS Sulaco after alien reference. the ship eventually got sold but i plan on re-using this cool name :p

my ship when the game is out will have a much more concrete naming convention of course

alright, so i guess the big word is experimenting.

but im curious, you said "if/when you start fighting tri-tachs"
why would i even do that ? am i not gonna lose access to their station ? (and therefore all the ships and weaponry)
you can always use station and trade with it even if you are hostile to the owner...you cannot however use it to repair your ships anymore

but isint it gonna be hard to use stations you are hostile with ? the defense fleet around them are pretty scary
Not exactly. A well built and purposed fleet can stand up to them with fair ease, and generally the starting point is your first capital ship or a lot of cruisers. Be prepared to take losses though.

ah, i cant take losses lol, i just get attached too easily to my ships, when the ISS Raptor (hound) got downed, i almost immediatly re-loaded :P
altho with this thread im learning that im entering the point at which frigate are losing viability in my fleet (even worse for hounds).

might sell all my hounds and lashers for a second eagle...

General Discussion / Please help me grasp Starfarer's finer details
« on: July 16, 2012, 11:19:37 AM »
[prelude]
i love starfarer and have, in only two days, spent more time playing it than id admit.
Yet, since i started playing, i couldnt help but feel like i was missing on something. When i came to this forum to read a little, this impression was confirmed.
As such, i wil write the major points of my concerns down here, and ill appreciate any help and tips people are willing to share.
You are, of course, free to share tips and dispense help on topic that arent covered here.

-Chapter 1 : "its like playing pokemon without elemental weakness and non-damaging move" (strategic weaponization)
  • -assault chaingun
  • -light autocannon
  • -tactical laser
  • -pulse laser
  • -harpoon mrm

thats basicly what you'll find on all of my ship, turret on autofire, i take the hardpoints and just run-and-gun.
I know its somewhat paradoxal, but while im (in theory) aware of system weaknesses (kinetic>shield etc). In practice, i cant wrap my head around it. There's some stats in weapons that i dont get and i always end up going for the most obvious choices (see above). salamander mrm's and phase beam are a good example.

(Additional detail) not sure that will help or not, but i have 2 Hounds, 3 Lashers, a Medusa, a Hammerhead and an Eagle. All geared according to the previously mentionned list

[Conclusion] This leaves me wondering, is this just the loadout that suits my wild style, or am i truly missing on the finer, strategic point of gearing up my ships ?

-Chapter 2 : "F***ing missile, how do they work ?!" (proper missile usage)

This one is a no brainer as im sure a lot of people have trouble with it.
I always avoid missile in general. Harpoons are the sole exception for two reasons
  • they have good damage and tracking
  • i believe every slot should be filled with something
For me, anything else is either underpowered or too hard to aim (i tried swarmers, that didint work well). My tactics with them will usually be to drop 1~2 when my opponents shield is down. And with the low ammo, that dosent last very long
You will surely understand how baffled i was when i saw an Onslaught build with 4 torpedo launcher on it.

[Conclusion] This is an easier one to solve, im sure i just need someone to tell me more about proper missile usage

-Chapter 3 : Hard flux, soft flux, permanent flux damage

No witty title for this one, i just came upon those terms while reading this forum and have never saw them in-game, i have absolutely no clue what theyre about.
I feel tho that this "permanent flux damage" thing might help with the problems mentionned in chapter 1

-Chapter 4 : "Anyone who knows how to fly come over here !" (crew management)

That one just puzzle me. I first saw something weird when my ship all had some regular and veteran crew, which all changed when i put my eagle cruiser in first place on the list. All my best crew members were now there and every other ship had the leftovers and the green crews

[Conclusion] Is there a way to choose which crew goes where that im unaware of ?

-Chapter 5 : "How primitive, they only have fusion reactors and particle shields" (Low tech vs High tech ships)

Another term i saw while reading around. At first i thought it was just a way to categorize Hegemony ships versus Tri-Tachyon ones, but after some thinking, i think it means something else.
Something else that totally escape me.

[Conclusion] Again, am i ignoring stats or details in ships spreadsheet that would further hint about this low-tech/high-tech ship dissociation ?

-Chapter 6 : "The plan ? Err...I'll figure it out while we get there" (tactical combat)

Another one im having a hard time with, i usually just gear my ship like i would if i played them and then just let them be in combat while i use my own flagship.
I've tried assigning order some times, but it was shabby at best. most of the time it dosent even let me give ship-specific assignment and i have no clue why.

[Conclusion] Nothing to mention here, im just having a hardtime with bigger scale strategies

And thats about it. I love this game and im enjoying it a lot, but i feel like i would enjoy it even more if i fully understood its finer mechanism.

Hi there!

One thing you might want to look into is what your display "color quality" is set to (you want 32 bit).

Checking into the various graphics-driver-related settings might help, too - it's possible that the driver update reset some settings to defaults that you had previously adjusted.

Another thing to do is to make sure that both games are set to use the correct graphics card - on some laptops, there are two - a crappy, integrated card on the motherboard, and a better card. If a game decides to use the integrated card, that will often cause problems.

The simplest thing to do, though, would be to install an older version of the graphics drivers. Occasionally, a new driver version will have some bugs - generally, unless you specifically need something from a new version, I wouldn't update the drivers. There's always the slight risk it'll mess something up - "if ain't broke, don't fix it", and all that.

:/ i know its already set at 32bit and having never meddled with graphics-driver-related thing, i wouldnt know whats default and whats better :/
i got a tower with a radeon HD 5570, i had updated the driver a while ago in the hopes of making a particuliar game/feature work. due to my lack of knowledge in this domain, i almost bombed my computer trying to update the driver :(

trying to revert to a previous version would be a hazardous undertaking (i still might try it when i contact my tech savyy friend tho)

/sigh, i wish there was just some fixing tool for that like with that .dll problem i got a month ago :(

ok, i registered just so i could post here.
what the [expletive] am i suppose to do.
minecraft and starfarer used to work perfectly. then for another reason, i updated my drivers. and now both games dosent work anymore !

i keep getting the mistake and when trying to find help, i only find "update your driver" ! thats what made the game screw up. not to mention i almost bombed my comp when i updated them...
