Use of TA map textures is... interesting, as a concept, but I'm not sure it works quite so well 'on paper'.

This page might have some useful inspiration if you continue with the TA theme, though.

I'd also say that these lay outs (the weapon slots) are different enough to warrant being entirely different ships.

The second one looks much higher-tech. Perhaps it's an upgraded "Mark II" redesign of the original... the medium turret is no longer needed thanks to superior mobility, but the "Mark I" is still in widespread use amongst militia forces and pirates due to the surplus of Mark Is being sold off to help pay for more Mark IIs.

Either way, these are some pretty nice pieces of work. For markings, what about white or grey stripes? There doesn't seem to be much room for logos or decals, unfortunately.

99% of the images you see in threads are screencaps from ShipMaker. Don't forget to consult SM's manual (press F1 when using it), and failing that, the wyrdysm forums are there if you have any more complicated questions.

It will take time to learn all of the important bits of shipbuilding, such as depth and flow, but I don't think I need to reiterate how good your ships can look if you're a competent shipbuilder.

I seriously doubt any of them will have any interest in making ships for you guys, but who knows! Maybe you'll get lucky. You probably won't, though.

Still, like I said, if you're dead set on using SM to build ships, then you better understand how to use it and some of the concepts of ship design - don't just slap bits together at semi-random. I'm a pretty rusty shipbuilder, or else I'd make a better tutorial for it.

I have only a little bit of experience within spriting and graphic design, hence the lack of details and due to my lack of proper image editing software there is only so much I can do

What you can do is start practicing, and posting ships somewhere you can get good feedback on their design, then! Because, really, people can design some really good stuff.

Especially when they collaborate.

Oh, and another note; always make sure your ships are at default zoom before taking a screenshot for exporting to other programs. That avoids ugly blurring.

Press 'F1' in shipmaker to get a full list of the controls.

Also, I should note for anyone building ships using SM, that rotated bits will look pretty blurry, and please, please understand what you're actually doing when putting ships together. If you do it well, you can make some amazing things, but if you do it badly, you can make some really, really awful things.

Sorry to use you as an example in your own tutorial thread, sprog, but your submissions in the Caelus thread are pretty... offensive to the eye, to put it bluntly. Way too heavy on the doodads and internally disorganized. Use of the DST sections isn't helping; they're quite hard to use properly. Armoredcookie's clean and smooth designs, on the other hand, are a good example of a better design you can pull off. Once you learn how to do things like glow effects and such, though, then you'll really take off, and be able to do nice carriers and so many other things.

SM is a useful tool, but it alone does not make you into a good shipbuilder. You still need to understand how to use it to make anything that looks good. Read the Shipmaker Info & Help forum. Be sure not to mix certain styles as they go badly together. Since you're designing ships with it, don't be afraid to sign up on the forums there to ask for feedback from people who know how things work. They're quiet but we don't bite (much).

I should feel it's also worth noting that you could turn the Starfarer weapon mount sprites into a format compatible with shipmaker and apply them to a ship as part of the construction process.

These are some fine-lookin' ships indeed. I especially like the Albatross, and the angled missile racks on the Vixen and Auria are a nice touch.

Speaking of aesthetics, the strikecraft definitely need some work - the Draken looks rather... like an escape pod with wings and a gun, whilst the outlining on the Hornet is inconsistent compared to the Foxbat and Tracer. The Draken looks more suited to being a primitive light fighter, whilst the Hornet looks more like a fast, agile, and fragile interceptor-type. Perhaps take a look at Freespace 2's fighters for more inspiration there?

More once I've actually had a chance to play around with them, on account of still getting the hang of things/being busy with life/other projects/etc.
