Try setting the pagefile on another drive entirely if you have it (ideally also moving the Starsector install there), try chkdsk-ing (with full /R) the original drive as disk errors/bad sectors can and do influence anything that accesses the pagefile. Also some things do need some pagefile to work properly, even if 100mb, so it's somewhat not recommended in my opinion to not have any pagefile, especially not on your main OS install drive.

Do you happen to have multiple instances of Java active in the task manager after multiple game restarts?

General Discussion / Re: What What?! Mother Ships?
« on: January 18, 2019, 06:40:07 AM »
Oh wow. 0.7 was quite a long while ago, i'd even forgot the AI had a Surrender option at one point. In short, i guess it got figured out but that's a mod, in the current version of SS there is a thing called a mothership, but is not that and definitely isn't capturable or salvageable without mods. To be fair, Starsector's more about the interesting ships to fly, not necessarily the biggest ships to fly.

How other people fly the Conquest:
Bit unfair to use one other guy as an example for how everybody flys Conquest.

You fly it with mods? Cause Squall missiles don't belong on it's sides.

Wasn't taking any jabs with 'everyone' just using it for contrast. :)

Yeah, personally i hardmod switch the Large front missiles with the Medium side missiles. The reason is due to how the game treats targetting Squalls extremely poorly when fired extremely off center from the base model, making them useless unless shooting point blank, straight ahead. I consider it a technical problem, not a design challenge.

Plus it looks cooler so there's that too.

If i were to play it vanilla, i'd use Hammer Barrages and use a set of Storm Needlers.

How other people fly the Conquest:

Spoiler

[close]

Tested it in the simulator 1v1 against Onslaught, 1v1 against Conquest, and 1v3 against Eagle/Falcon/Dominator. So far this build (along with some minor variations of it) was the only way I could beat those ships. It works by filling space with tons and tons of missiles while I maneuver into broadside range and launch some harpoons once the target has no shields.

 ;D ;D ;D

For talking's sake, this can also 1v1 (with skills) any capital Sim ship, all the frigates in the Sim, or triple Condor with Astral. I /may/ add a set of Mjolnir to replace one set of Hephaestuses but we'll see.

I have a different set of gripes with the existing orders.

Clicking 'Eliminate' on a target, and then clicking Strike, unsets Eliminate and leaves the Strike. Clicking Eliminate again on the Strike targets sets both Strike and Eliminate. And secondly, how many carriers get assigned to a Strike is completely random as far as i've seen. You can have anywhere from 1 to 3 getting assigned to anything, frigate to a capital. I don't know if it's a matter of range, or agression, or danger of enemy ship or.. i don't know.

I checked every six months and they were still patching X3, then a new game, and they patched that too. I was waiting for an X title to come out, and be relatively polished and playable, but they keep churning out new titles in the same old state. It's like groundhog day in a weird way.

Unsure how that's calculated while bugged to be fair. But i'd rather have the 150 straight up armor boost.

General Discussion / Re: My biggest problem with Officers
« on: January 09, 2019, 05:59:18 AM »
Really, it'd be nice if the officer skill only affected how many officers you can have manning ships at any one time. I'd like to be able to swap out decent but not quite perfect officers with new talent to see if I can't get better luck legitimately.

I wonder why this isn't a thing to be honest. As long as you pay sallaries why does the game care how many officers you have on your roster but not on the battlefield.

The settings are in the registry, so they carry over from install to install, generally, unless the new version specifically says they don't.

That explains everything. Including the other computer which had SS at one point installed if i remember right.

Sorry for the bother. :P

I would say avoid large fighter-count battles, but that's nearly impossible with larger fleets.

Will reset battlesize to 300 and see how that goes.

Starsector defaults, i'm almost as baseline control of a player as you can have. :) As to streaming, i max out the FPS on the regular, plus it's NVENC hardware encoding on the GPU side, not the CPU.

LE: In settings i see Battle Size set to 500, though i'm certain i didn't touch it. O.o And SS does a full delete/reinstall of core files each install afaik, so that has to have been changed manually post 0.9a RC10? Blargh.

LE2: Fresh installed on another computer, the Battle size is set to 200. Did a few saves/loades/battles, and it stuck to 200. (also is music supposed to start out as 0% and sound to 100? pushing 'defaults' set them both to 100 and battlesize back to 200, weird but notable).

I guess to cut down on the extreme amount of specialization. We already can do a lot with ships and fits, throwing a fully equipped officer ultra-designed for one particular role might be a bridge too far. Plus, technically, it's not that horrible if you pre-set what kind of pilot you want to have. Rarely, if ever, you'll be thrown in a corner choosing between a level 1 skill you don't want and another level 1 skill you can't do anything with on that character.

Oh wow, i haven't really managed to get in the top endgame, barely engaging my first large (ish) proper fleets, but my game dropped from 60 (63) FPS to 22 at the lowest in a relatively non-extreme battle, vanilla (past chatter and rotary). https://youtu.be/6YcEv1B3I6Y?t=2863 I7 2700k, nothing battering my computer in the background (minus the constant stream) or anything like that. I've had some slumps here and there, but 22 FPS?

74
I guess full phase ship fleets are fun and somewhat uncommon to run.

Check Settings, and it has two tabs at the top, Controls, and Settings again, which has what you need.
