I was in a losing battle versus an enemy cruiser in my Bolter class carrier. The battle had been disastrous, 3 out of my 4 medusas had been utterly destroyed by the enemies fighters and destroyers. Only one of them was left, and as I looked at the map, he looked like a goner. He was fighting a wing of fighters, 2 enforcers and a hound alone. My flux was way too high, and my shields were about to fail. Some broadsides on the enemy Dragoon eventually forced it to vent, but I was sure that after venting I'd be a goner. All it would take is a few succesful hits and my shields would go down, and without any armor left on my hull, I wouldn't be able to take the beating. Just as I was about to turn and run, the Medusa sweeps behind the Dragoon while it's venting, unleashes a rain of hell upon it's engines, then navigating on it's side, and disabling multiple weapon slots with the ion cannons.

Much of the Dragoon is now disabled, while the Medusa is pounding its shields away. After taking some distance, I swoop in again and unleash a broadside of hell upon the distracted Dragoon. And the rest is history :)

That elite commander of the Medusa survived for almost the whole game, eventually commanding my Odysseys :)

I had no idea you had Linux, and it was pretty safe to assume that you have Windows. And I do know the differences between the two.

Vandala, I think the problem is on your end. The newest version runs just fine for me.

Anyways, if you guys are okay with it, I could finish up some ship descriptions.
That does not explain the difference in / and \ between the two error messages, which I find odd.

Besides what could I do wrong? Download the mod, unpack into the Starfarer mod folder and that ought to work right? (after you activate it in the mod list)

What operating system are you running?

I have Windows 7 64bit. Anyways, maybe you had a derp moment and forgot to delete the old one? Have you restarted your PC, etc, all the usual stuff? Or reinstalled Starfarer?

Not a coder, so can't really tell apart more complex error messages.

Flak, love it. Set the damage down, turn the fire rate up, and increase the blast radius for best results.

Flak is truly epic. Miss? Don't worry, you'll splash your enemy to death.. And get around his shield too :D

That's what Enforcers are for! 2 flak cannons pretty much tear any fighter wing apart. Medusa can be the harasses vessel that keeps other destroyers occupied, while the Enforcer takes care of the fighters. Then it can swoop in to help the Medusa, and unleash some harpoons/HE rockets from the frontal mounts.

Laser > Fire

Laser achieves the same goal as fire, being insanely hot. You'd need pretty goddamn hot fire to dent a battleship. On top of that, the laser has an easier delivery method, it has the range advantage and is overall a better weapon.

Medusa is pretty easy to pilot, yeah. Just outfit it with lots of vents, 2 pulse lasers and you're good to go.

Personally, I just go for a cheap destroyer straight away, without getting another frigate. I usually get either a Medusa or an Enforcer. After that, I get another one of the same model, and then get a cheap cruiser. A Goose MKII or Dragoon are great choices, and after that I just mass them. Though it depends if I'm going low tech or high tech, sometimes I only get Tri ships, sometimes only Hegemony and Pirate ships.

I agree with you, this game is a true gem, other space nuts and people who like space games really need to be informed of this game, it's just awesome.

Enforcer - 3 flak cannons (two on either flank, one center), 2 heavy machineguns, 4 swarmer SRM.
You may want to swap out some swarmers for Harpoons if you want ship killing power.

Swarmers are rather useless if you already have 3 flak cannons, although they provide some range, usually fighters can evade missiles shot from such a distance.

..through the whole day, you keep coming up with new loadouts for your ships and new fleet compositions you can try when you get home.

..you dream about Starfarer. For the whole night. Epic ship combat everywhere.

Seriously though, this game is too addicting. I stumbled upon this gem 4 days ago, and havn't touched another game since. This is just incredible, it has everything I could've ever wanted from a game. THANK YOU! :)

I even started making a new cruiser, stripping apart parts from other ships and combining them into one, horrible monster. Scrap pirates ftw!
