Mods / Durendal's Overpowered Nonsense 0.3 (Critique Appreciated)
« on: March 21, 2012, 07:42:38 PM »
Been learning to make sprites and stat ships from the ground up over the past couple days. They're not even remotely balanced; I just finangled in whatever sounded neat.

IF Anyone with more experience can take a look at it and spot any potential issues, or just give general advice, I'd certainly appreciate it.

Here's the files:Download 0.3

Harbinger and related mission
-Harbinger only costs one fleet point in the mission, because I'm too stupid to figure out how to edit the available FP.

Cherub and Diva

And the ships:

"Cherub" Inertialess Drive advanced fighter

"Diva" Inertialess Drive advanced gunship

"Harbinger" Ancient Dreadnaught (Base Sprite supplied by megal00t)

I did it with an opponent, actually. One shot from one ship each turn, or add a new ship. Just doodling back and forth until someone "won" or the paper got destroyed by the rampant scribbling; then start over on the next page. Good times. Might need to do it again sometime.

Well, one possible solution would be to base the mod on the Honorverse before the books actually take place; Missiles being important, but the ability to throw a billion downrange isn't the deciding factor yet. Have the focus more on beam broadsides with Missile support. Throw in the grav lance and energy torps, and you have plenty to play with.

Alright, tried again, this time from scratch, trying to keep everything you guys have said, and my previous experience, in mind. I tried to make a fighter, figuring that starting smaller would be easier than just jumping right at a destroyer.

And here's our results: The "Cherub" experimental inertialess drive fighter.

The blue open bits are supposed to be translucent, though you can't tell on a blue background. Alternatively, I was thinking of making them completely empty. Thoughts? Is it possible to align the engine hardpoints to make those sections seem to glow, maybe?

I've thought about this a little myself, and there are ways it could be gone about, though I really don't think Starfarer's engine can handle having two separate shields on each side of the ship to represent sidewalls, and there's no way the wedge could be modeled at all.

If you just won't something *like* honorverse, with ridiculous missilespamrape everywhere, then that *may* be doable; though I saw in another post that counter-missiles are currently a no-go.

Trying to learn to code a little so I'll toss the idea around as I go.

What are you looking for in a collaborator exactly? I can write fluff and ship/fleet doctrine like nobodies business, but I'm not the best coder in the world by any stretch of the imagination.

I do on the other hand, know someone else who just got into modding Starfarer as well; and he's a lot more proficient in the scripty bits than I am. Maybe we can form a triad of sorts?

I can see what you mean about just kitbashing the parts of other sprites; and really that looks like something I could do without a lot of fuss; the issue is when I want to make something based on a specific, existing idea. Though I suppose with a little creative stretching, even that I could manage, perhaps. I'll just have to give it a swing.

I wanted to put in more detail to the surrounding armored sections of the hull, but figured, at least on this one, I'd better stop before I just butchered it. And I see what you mean about it being too flat as well. I'll have to see if I can't try and figure out how to make that work.

Back to work it is ^^

At a very basic level. I've never used an Image program more complicated than paint before.

A friend of mine makes models; and instead of doing the *sensible* thing and asking him to try and convert them; I tried to make it from lines and starfarer parts.

His original work: http://wowandwas.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d321hw0

And my fine little mess:

Help and Hints welcome, constructive or otherwise. I have a feeling it might be in my best interest to just slowly back away form any further artistic endeavors.

Just figured out how to use paint.net to extract these things. Plenty of colored ones in the BSG section, to boot.

Thanks for the pointers, Trylobot. I've got a few ideas for what I might try out.

'ello gents. Just starting to fiddle around with modding Stafarer myself. While thinking about some alternative places to get some sprites. (I didn't feel right taking ones that have already been used in mods and statting them different; free use or not) I remembered this little website I used to gawk at when I was a kid. And whaddya know, it's still up and running.

http://www.shipschematics.net/

Some of the images might not be perfect for immediate usage, but others you could basically color in and call it a day.

On that note is there a "Crash Course to Modding?" here somewhere? It looks like banging rocks together compared to some things I've tried before; (Homeworld, for instance,) but I'm not the most program-savvy individual in the world by any means.
