They are? Ahh, the weapon arc facings, off by 10 degrees - thank you, fixed.

Prototype hulls, I tell you.

Minor bug: the Pirate skin of the Wolf seems a bit shifted to the right. You can see this by comparing other skins with the Pirate one in the codex.

... Also, the naming and descriptions of special skins aren't very consistent. The Pirate skin for the Kite has a Pirate indicator and description but none of the other Pirate skins do, even ones that are actually different from Defective skins (Buffalo, Mule). The Dominator XIV's description is different from every other XIV ship. Hegemony Auxilliaries don't have descriptions, although I note that the Kite one has a commented-out description.

Oh yes, fixing those up now.

(And man, I did indeed butcher one line of pixels out of the Pirate Wolf! Can't believe no one noticed before - thanks for pointing it out.)

*Cough* Maybe I updated the sprites - for the Conquest at least - without fixing the engine glows? Or was that the patch before? Pretty sure I didn't touch the Hammerhead at all however.

Are you really sure? Because it looks super messed up, like, not the kind of messed up that could've gone overlooked for too long. (Fixing now, about to check in.)

(... okay, maybe not then. I did not, in fact, check to see how messed up it was. *straightens invisible tie, classily*)

The Conquest's engine flare alignment is messed up.  No screenshot because it should be obvious if you look at it.
Same with the Hammerhead, though that ones a bit harder to see.

Uhh, how'd that happen? Thank you, let me fix that up.

I've heard repeated phase shifts can really mess up your mind.

E: Scarab sounds cool. What about the other two?

I've really enjoyed playing as a smuggler in the Wayfarer, personally.

Could ya post a pic of the updated Hyperion? Was it made a bit thicker/larger so as to not appear like it was more weapon than ship when you had it fully equipped? heh

What and ruin the surprise?  ???

Soooo....David could you tell us what the 'larger' ships are and the 'roles' they are going to be filling out? Please?

Well, more awesome and cool stuff that's super useful while being at least very slightly larger. So mostly that.  ;)

 :-X

Glad to hear that larger ships are now nearer to the top of the to-do list.

(Not quite what I said!)

Ships are pretty easy to crank out in little time now, especially the small ones. This set was made to fill in some gaps, particularly the Wayfarer to fill in the gap that the Cerberus failed to fill. Roughly speaking.

And we've got a list of ship roles to fill in, generally larger from here on out, though of course the larger they are the more time they take. That said, and now that this set is done, I'm going to try to focus for a bit on other things.

if they were "mostly done" by the time David made his blog post about the ion weapons, that last screenshot of the Harbinger confuses me: it looks like its firing its two new weapons while phased.

i figured it was a planned activatable system, allowing firing in p-space for a short duration, maybe at the cost of weapons building hard flux. but that wouldn't be something that directly affects an enemy. or maybe it just looks like it's phased because of the smashed up armor and the glowing phase coils..

No, they could never fire while phased. The ship looks especially dark because it's all banged up and I believe the coils are still going because I've just come out of phase so the cooldown period is still in effect. I posted it because I enjoyed how misleading the screenshot looked (plus it captured a cool emp arc effect). :D

If we were to compare the three Epochs to armoured fighting vehicles made throughout the 20th ceuntry, which one would be a good example of Core Epoch design and/or doctrine?

I think a naval analogy is much more apt, though still is only loosely applied.

So: Lowtech = WW1 & previous, midline = WW2, hightech = post-WW2.

(Armoured fighting vehicles would be much more limited, and I guess for the sake of an interesting scale we'd have to restrict ourselves to just WW2 'cause that's where all the interesting variety is. I mean, very very roughly, WW1 was like "what's a tank! Oh, this is a tank" and post-WW2 was like "it's all about the MBT". Though, side-note, the doctrine around how various nations used the MBT is indeed fascinating, I mean, just take Sweden's turretless thing vs. Israel's Merkerva, and wossit turret stabilizer technology and fascinating developments in armour and active countermeasures ... but so much of it is only tangentially inapplicable to the mood Starsector is trying to evoke.  ... So yeah, let's stick with the naval metaphor.)

Funny story, the first pass on the first set of weapons did indeed use a vastly smaller size.

The current medium was the old large, the current small the old medium, and the old small? See the attached image.

Edit: ... Which explains those tiny, tiny turret slot looking things on the Onslaught sprite. Huh.

That there are no post-Collapse designs other than modification jobs does not follow from the statement that there are no recent low-tech designs aside from certain modification jobs.

That's why I'm asking.

We're going to have to find out by seeing what future updates to Starsector hold for us :)
