General Discussion / Re: How large was Opis?
« on: April 22, 2024, 07:15:45 AM »
Three thoughts on artistic intent here:
  • Would Pathers lie?? In other words: people often say things that fudge numbers a bit, often for rhetorical reasons, and often they can work out a way to believe themselves. (Ah, these numbers include the casualties caused by infrastructure breakdowns and starvation in other places, and they include the war-dead, and, if you think about it....)
  • It's really interesting how difficult it is, in real life, to have true and accurate strategic/historical knowledge. Game simulations don't tend to embrace this in their mechanics because getting inaccurate numbers is really annoying and therefore really difficult to make 'work' as a game. But here, it's a matter of narrative/aesthetic, not part of the mechanics (except insofar as we give rough powers-of-ten population estimates), so it's OK to do!
  • To that point, there is also a concept of people who are "real" according to official state bureaucracy, and people who haven't been counted. Or, indeed, people who are "real" to bureaucracy but don't actually exist! All those population numbers in Wikipedia are guesses, and it only gets worse as you go back in history, or into states/polities with less bureaucratic capacity, or less trustworthy bureaucracy. These are all potentially very interesting narrative problems (which, perhaps, could only be overcome by an absurdly powerful god-like AI integrated directly into the state apparatus, perhaps some kind of "core" which we would assign a first-rate signifier on some kind of scale of effectiveness...)

Early impression is we're probably not adding a Fandom-style comments section since people treat them like a comments section on, well, typical social media sites, which is to say the main purpose is to post funny or "funny" comments.

Probably wise.

It's like every Reddit post: 100 comments about an obvious pun, 100 based on a sexual double entendre, and 100 repeating an old meme. I'd have defended this stuff to the hilt *checks watch* 25 years ago, but feeling pretty jaded about it all nowadays. (Avoiding the pitfall of the useless comments section is why r/AskHistorians is objectively the best subreddit!)

General Discussion / Re: I am a monster.

Officer, please! How could it have been a 'hate crime' if I loved doing it?  ;D ;D ;D

Imagine if you walked into a McDonalds and said "Hate crimes are cool!". You would, for understandable reasons, be asked to leave despite saying "It was just a joke, bro" to the manager.

I'm not psychic so I can't know what you truly intend, so I have to work based on what it sounds like. And what it sounds like is not good.

In other words, edgelord-posting like this is getting close to violating several forum rules, so consider this a moderation warning. Remember (everyone) that you're posting in a public forum attached to a business.

Announcements / Re: Starsector 0.97a (Released) Patch Notes
« on: March 29, 2024, 05:14:41 AM »
Anyway, as a bug report, I only just noticed recently: in .97-RC11, the lpp_JangalaEnter1 text in rules.csv has for some reason been wiped completely.

Agh, that sucks! Fixed in dev, thank you.

Very nice! Now I can easily reference obscure details as I write for the game!

I mean, uh, use my own notes. Yeah.

It's a hint at What's Going On and hook for a continuation of more narrative mission(s?) that don't exist yet.

So don't worry, you're not missing anything.

Thank you, fixed Macario's temporary cockney accent, the Diktat not being able to remember their own overblown titles & etc.

Bug Reports & Support / Re: At the gates quest bug
« on: March 22, 2024, 07:19:07 AM »
Played up to the quest again. It would appear the issue showed up - for me - when I finished the initial dialogue with Baird and, when the objectives showed "talk to Scylla Coureuse" and "get credentials from Horus Yaribay", going directly to Horus Yaribay without talking to Coureuse would cause the "get credentials" objective to be stuck on, even when talking to Coureuse again later. Basically, it seems Coureuse has to be talked to at Galatia prior to talking to Horus Yaribay and getting the credentials.

100%.

I'm changing this so that the next step of the mission is to simply talk to Coureuse with no option to go fly away and talk to Yaribay- Coureuse is right there, after all.

Back in May of last year I pointed this out and it seemed like David fixed it, but it's still here.

Ah dang, don't know how that slipped through! Fixed in-dev now.

Nice find! I've now closed up this loophole in-dev.

So uh with recent rule changes...

Alright everyone, chill out please. I missed this other post, which makes three posts in two days made by a new account in order to harass mod creators via public concern trolling.

1. User Somerandomguy16123 is banned for harassment, trolling, and brigading.
2. Also, jeez people: please use the dang "report to moderator" button when you see this kind of thing.

Suggestions / Re: Additional dialogue item for the failed Gate test
« on: March 09, 2024, 12:40:40 PM »
It's an interesting idea. A little obscure maybe, but I'll make a note and see if it's convenient as I review certain parts of the Galatia missions.

So uh with recent rule changes, what will happen to Nia Tahl who was known to have on few occassions a code that could very well be in blunt breaking of the recent rules about "Good citizen behavior". Like with those stealth nerf codes that caused certain factions to be straight up OP against certain other factions.

Hi, welcome to the forums - I see you joined just yesterday. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the forum rules.

If you have a moderation concern, use the "report to moderator" button, and do not post in threads like this. This is the second (edit: third) time you've done this.

Is that a typo ? English isn't my native language, so perhaps I'm simply not good enough at speaking it :D

Yep, the "the" should be moved over one word previous. Thank you!

And all the above are fixed in-dev, thank you for the reports.

I'm going to have to dig into this convo and make sure it all works in every possible situation - (and was planning to do some work on it to handle the case of the player being part of the League anyway) - so: noted, thank you! Will review.

(There is indeed a lot of implication going on. Like, Siyavong is meant to imply that he has an inkling of what you're up to, and you confirming it just confirms it. But if you do that earlier in the dialog and he doesn't acknowledge it _there_ ... well. Anyway, looking into it...)
