Discussions / Re: Dwarf Fortress sold 300k units in 6 days on steam
« on: January 14, 2023, 02:22:23 PM »
DF was in development for 16 years before its release, so if anything its success vindicates the current development model.
And starsector was in development for 11 years lol
I have no idea what the f is wrong with people on this forum and their assumptions that steam which features all levels of vaporware, is unfit for starsector which is in a pre-release state.
Not alpha, not tech demo, not beta, not your grandmother's teeth, but version 0.95

It doesnt need to be on steam, the developer is free to lose any amount of money they wish to, but these dipsh*t posts on the forum make me see red.
Not one of you clowns can justify coherently why starsector cant go on steam, but you defend your clown ass f-ing incoherent, fully *** and detached bs opinion like you actually could reason it. Yet you cant.

I can list you a hundred games that are in varying stages of alpha and beta. Some with hundred thousands of supporters despite delivering 1-2 content patches a year like valheim, and some which have been abandoned for years now, but still are being sold.
Yet your clown ass firmly plants your own foot in your mouth and go like "it ain redy deddy cuz eh sed so".

I cant.
I just cant.
Fckin irrational clowns.
At least have the common courtesy, decency and common sense to stick to factual reality, would you?
Alex doesnt want to and thats it.
Alex has his own reasons, its his product, his choice, his whatever. Every decision lies with him. Acceptable. Fine.
Yet you are here, making up *** on his behalf, talking absolute horse shait all over the place, making zero sense and antagonize people who offer a perfectly valid point.
Do you think starsector is a kpop band or some sh*t where you can spasm out in a literal 0 iq fanboy religious fervor?
Is this your religion or some shait? Is that why you cant present as much as two fcking coherent thoughts which are connected to eachother?

I wish i could at least remotely comprehend what drives chat bot intellect level bots like you people.
But i cant.
And it pisses me off.

General Discussion / Re: Why Alex doesn't want early access on Steam

Dude, don't you think throwing a tantrum because someone else's game isn't as popular as you want it to be on their own forum makes you sound a bit... entitled?
I spent the past 5 minutes trying to conceptualize or at least try to comprehend how you managed to use the word "entitled" in association with something i have literally no stake in and is of no benefit to me whatsoever.
I can only conclude that you have no idea what the word means.

By the way how does being a player for XXX years make you an expert on marketing choices? Riddle me that.
Could you tell me what a cat is and then justify how you could proclaim it without a phd in biology?

How was the "hundred thousand modders" figure derived?
1. Look up the number of modders just on steam
2. Was totally the point brother. Good job on going for the essence of a post instead of drowning yourself face first in a strawman.

Man devoted 30 years to playing games, yet couldn't spend a single one to improve communication skills. We truly live in a gamer society.
Being cheeky aside, do you really think such a post would suddenly persuade Alex to release the game on Steam right now.
Im very sorry that my "communication skills" do not hit the minimum standard for your taste.
Maybe its due to my lack of "communication skills" that you start to assume things like the idea that i want to persuade alex to do something.
Probably because much like one of the other "apex of thought and intellect" performers above, you think that its of a benefit to me, so its a question of entitlement.
So while we are having this discussion about "communication skills" why dont you elaborate for me what benefit there is for me with Alex getting more money for his work?

I mean i get it. We are on a game's forum.
One of the only places in the world where logic and rationality have no meaning, and everything is built on your own ego and the level of fanboyism you can show, even if its completely mentally r***rded.
But you know....
Even so i thought that most of you could tell whether or not something is of a benefit to the author of the game you love.

Do i care whether or not Alex and the rest gets more money for his work?
I think he'd deserve it, but its not like im not gonna see a single cent of loss or profit regardless of his choices.
But hey, at least im not on the forums trying to actively white knight for why he SHOULD NOT get more money, while playing intellectual with ze "communication skills".

I’ve been playing over 30 years too and that doesn’t give me insight into game development and marketing.
Yeah i know. Some children try to learn to read for 30 years too, and they never really succeed.
Its not your fault. Dont worry about it.
For everything else, let me ask just this single thing: Is starsector good in your opinion?
Would it sell? Is it playable? How does it perform compared to other games, indie or otherwise in its current state?

Its not rocket science my dude and it has nothing to do with development or marketing.
Anyone can look at steam and see for themselves what games and developers are doing, but really, im not trying to rub it in. If you cant figure it out, then just accept the fact and move on. Much like how dyslexia wont make you any less of a person, this wont make you any less either, so cheer up.

I think Steam would add a lot of benefits in terms of exposure and revenue.
The benefits you'd get would far outweigh the risks (IMHO)
Alex could potentially use that revenue to hire a single pair of hands to help out if he wanted.

More than 10+ years of development, this game is more polished than most of the early access tripe we see on Steam.
People would take to it quite well and there will be a LOT of players who still don't know about this game and would wet themselves to play it.
Please be careful with your wild assumptions and "entitlement".
Apparently pointing out these facts is considered a taboo on the forums as im sure the god lords of dyslexia and intellectual supremacy will point it out for you.

For everything else: i hope the scalding rudeness is to everyone's taste and desire.
Not sure why a great number of people are supporting Alex in his assumption that his game is not worthy of steam, but its no skin off of my back.
Feel free to report me if your ego got scratched up in the process of reading my post. Its sadly inevitable cause as many will tell you, my "communication skills" are bad since i didnt spend enough time on improving them.

There are even popular games on steam like valheim which have basically a once a year content update.
Hell, we havent even mentioned a damn thing about games like Ark which will sell you dlcs before the game is even finished.

No sorry. Alex's aversion to steam is absolutely nothing more than a psychological issue or complete ignorance in regards of whats going on in the gaming industry these days.
If StarSector was on steam, at least we'd have a hundred thousand modders working on it, which would throw the game in the upper echelons of steam in less than half a year.
I have been playing for 30 years, i have been around from the start of steam, from the birth of the internet, and i am perfectly capable to tell that not releasing starsector on steam due to some mystical fear for criticism, is about as rational as skinning all 4 of your limbs out of fear that you might catch a skin disease.

No skin, no skin disease. Genius.
Not selling your product, no criticism from buyers. You cant argue with that.

Again: ONLY and ALONE the modding community would carry this game on their shoulders into the top 100 category of steam.
MARK MY WORDS on this.
Even if Alex and the rest stopped developing altogether after putting the game up on steam, it would flourish because it already is 90% complete already and content would be produced endlessly for it via modding.
Have you seen what the community does to things like rimworld?
There are games which have several hundred times more content in mods than they have in the game itself.

Stop supporting this utter idiocy of an argument that Starsector cannot be released on Steam due to criticism.
And just to put one more nail in the coffin of this argument: StarSector already has its fan base. A fanbase which will stick to it cause it already knows how the development cycle works.
So releasing it on steam will never result in a net minus of players, only a NET PLUS because many more might stick around as new fans.

TL;DR: The level of irrationality that goes into the idea that starsector is not steam viable, IS actually "unrealistic". You have to be completely cut off from reality to think that its a valid argument.

Bug Reports & Support / Re: Ship quality not increasing at colonies
« on: June 14, 2021, 10:44:54 PM »
Okay, so how about not registering ANY ship quality bonuses AT ALL then?
I have 2 orbital works in the same system. 1 with pristine nano forge and alpha core, the other with a corrupted nano forge. There are no (aka NONE) bonuses listed for ship quality. Both of them are missing

5
Excellent mod which brings some rather welcome variety in planet construction but seems to be crawling with bugs. The worst offender till now is that Orbital works apparently no longer adds to ship quality. Donno whats going on there, but the entire thing is missing from the ship quality calculation along with a pristine nanoforge and an alpha core.
Second would be: Spending a story point on military relays before the upgrade process is through will lock the building as un-upgraded and makes you lose the story point spent on it. No matter how many times you try to upgrade it afterwards, it wont work. Upgrade process goes through, finishes and you are still left with the unupgraded building. There are also several crashes related either the academy or the embassy.

Yo. I think i ran into an error linked to this mod. There is a minor equipment cache containing a mod and if move the cursor over it, the game instantly crashes.
Log recorded the following error:

The issue is definitely related to the info window that opens when you hover the mouse over the item.
I tried to right click it instantly so there is no time for the info panel to open and the game did not crash. The item in question was Targeting Data Link.
Didnt encounter any other problems yet in my playthrough and been at it for a week. Its a nice mod, offers some serious options to tinker with builds. Thanks for your work.

General Discussion / Help request
« on: April 22, 2020, 07:06:27 AM »
Yo. Been playing on and off for years, but after i got chased out of my recent game again, i choose to make an account and just ask.
Regardless whether its modded or unmodded, is there any way to make your colonies be able to defend themselves?
Sounds like a stupid question, i know, but here is the thing. I always end up in scenarios where i get attacked by 7+ fleets of literal balls of warships and it doesnt matter how many military HQs i have, my colony fleets are usually like a breath of air in a tornado.

It doesnt matter that i put nano forges, it doesnt matter that ship quality is above 100%, it doesnt matter if i run a 4 planet solar system with all 4 running military HQs with whatever imaginable doctrines, i get invading fleets so strong that basically 1 single of them simply steamrolls my alpha cored starfortress, while most patrols simply choose to run from them.

I can on my own defend a planet, but in large raids or invasions this inevitably means that i can only defend 1 planet, ergo they strip and conquer everything else in the solar system.
TL;DR: How do i make my colonies capable of producing large, extremely strong fleets to defend themselves? I mean military HQ should be the obvious answer projecting forces interstellar and what not, but thats a literal joke compared to what im usually being attacked with.
