General Discussion / Re: Lion's Guard Sunder Availability
« on: April 16, 2024, 11:24:02 AM »
Lion's guard ships are definitely not available enough, especially for players looking to role-play as some sort of Diktat loyalist. Raiding the Lions guard headquarters should have a good chance to yield blueprints for ships/weapons used by the guard. For someone who doesn't want to come into conflict with the SD, I think some sort of option should be available to "upgrade" a regular Sindrian Diktat commission to a Lion's Guard commission; which would allow the player to access a Lion's Guard military market. Of course, this would require good relations with a High/Very High importance contact. Additionally, surplus nanoforge production opportunities could also be given by High importance contacts given a strong enough relationship with the contact and the Diktat.

The whole point of the update is to "Uniquify the factions" but the only unique thing the update introduces for the diktat is a set of D-skins, and two weapons you have to ruin your relations with said faction to acquire. People are complaining so much because all of the additions regarding the diktat only serve to negatively characterize a sub faction of the diktat as incompetent yes-men. Ultimately the LG ships being D-mod skins isn't even that big of a deal, but it's still a boring decision that seems like wasted effort.

The tariff rates could be a very good way of characterizing factions. My thoughts in list form:

Hegemony ~30%

Tri tachyon ~20-15%

Luddic church ~20%

Persean league ~10-30% depending on planet to represent the diversity in local polities

Sindrian diktat 25% (I would imagine them to be the hegemony but more business friendly)

Pirates 20-30% Some pirate polities are likely less extortionate than others

independents 10-30% (like the league)

Perhaps a well connected player with friends in high places could avoid taxes all together.

Real world oligarchies are enormously corrupt, and have to deal with a different type of tomfoolery. The hegemony should've probably split into a dozen diktats by now if power is "shared between military officials" as you say.

I knew that he was a despotic jerk with blood on his hands, but it never made much of an impression since so was everyone else.

The blogpost wasn't really framing Andrada as more of a bastard then anyone else, but as a tinpot, bog standard, incompetent, and bafoonish character. Because Andrada is unchallenged in any decisions making process, he is allowed to make foolish decisions constantly, but somehow clings onto power.

It's just that, this seems kinda stupid. Why doesnt the hegemony suffer from the same issues? Tri-tachyon looks like it would be very susceptible to this as well? Not to mention Andrada defied the hegemony, and was considered a talented admiral. The game at least to me and many others, allways characterized Andrada as Space Napoleon rather than cosmic tropico.

I dont know If anyone has mentioned this yet, but being a size 8 planet means having a population of just 100 million to nearly 1 Billion. Chicomatzoc could have only 102 million people and still technically be size 8. Hypothetically, if every size 7 planet had 99 million people, and Chico had 100 million, it would not be very significant on it's own. I think it's important to take into account this range, and that it's impossible to be absolutely sure just how many people live on size 7 and 8 worlds because of how vast the range is.

I dont mind it too much how it is, but imo it would be more interesting if the solar shielding was free, but instead the other hullmod be non removable, that would mean they are not strict upgrades or downgrades over normal ones, but sidegrades that still can be better in some situations (eg fighting high tech or remnants the free solar shielding would be a bigger plus, than the hullmod is minus)

I agree, this is probably the best and easiest compromise. I still think Andrada would’ve changed his ships in larger ways, like he did with the executor. I’d personally prefer this change + alternate mounts and systems as other have suggested.

A cool bit of flavor would be to have ship info be available in the fleet and refit screens. Things like age, model number, place of origin, ect. But to have it actually convey any meaning it couldn't be entirely random for most ships. For instance, the XIV ships would all have to be old enough to believably be part of the XIV battlegroup, and many ships in the sector are likely old enough to have been made outside of the sector before the collapse, so perhaps some would be made on planets that we have never heard of nor visited.

I wouldn’t count on it ever happening though. At some point in the most recent blog posts comments I believe Alex referred to the League as a minor faction. It would be a lot of effort to make these changes, so I wouldn’t expect anything like it for a long time, at least outside of mods.

Instead, everyone just honed in on The Diktat.

1. The DEMs and Pegasus had already been revealed one Alex's twitter

2. There isn't much to say about them, because everyone agrees that they are awesome.

So many people (myself included) have been complaining about the Sindrian Diktat changes because of their impact on the gameplay. The Hegemony has the XIV, Tri-tach has a large, mostly exclusive roster of high tech ships. The Church got two new capitals, both with very unique aspects, and the Persean league has an entire class of unique weapons. The Diktat? A worse version of another factions capital, and a bunch of D skins. The Diktat has been left largely generic, and their one unique aspect serves no purpose besides to make them look bad from a story perspective. It doesnt help that this change is boring and useless to players. (Besides the new weapons, which just reduce the Diktat to "the faction you farm for these two weapons")

TLDR: Every faction has a unique aspect, but the Diktat's is literally just a group of D skins; We had allready seen all of the other changes in the blog post beforehand.

The reason why only the Lion's gaurd have the hullmod is because they are given the most of the Supreme executors "attention". They do have the most resources of the sindiran fleet, as shown by the fact they have zero D mods other than spec. modifications. Again, this is still a bad way to demonstrate Andrada's overreach in the military. As many others have suggested the LG ships should have alternate mounts or systems to diversify gameplay instead of creating a group of basically useless ships.

I really like this idea, perhaps to take it a step further, certain fleets from certain worlds use slightly varied doctrines. Perhaps Westerneese has a greater focus on carriers and fighters than the other worlds. Honestly one way to make the league really unique is to have a greater focus on it's internal politics, and how that might affect gameplay. For instance, the player could support one league world in a feud against it's rival within the league, leading to one besting the other. Something that actually makes the Persean league feel more diverse.

If you read my rest of the post I made suggestion to implement the lore with more interest way

Been thinking about this.  If the Lion's Guard is meant to represent the fist of the dictator, I'd bet that makes non-LG officers a bit nervous. They might behave a bit differently in the presence of officers commanding LG ships, trying to guess how to please the officer, or at least avoid their gaze. They might even behave randomly 1 or 2 levels more cautiously or more aggressively than normal, at random, when LG ships with officers are present in the fleet.

That's definitely a stretch. The change wouldn't be that noticeable to the player, because the LG becomes both more aggressive and cautious at the same time, the average stays the same. To begin with, this thread was originally about the developer making gamepley changes based on lore justifications.
