Suggestions / Visable planetside cities
« on: September 27, 2019, 12:20:30 AM »
TLDR: a few or several city layers that are pasted upon a planet depending on their population amount and level of industry similar to THIS

I would very much enjoy a feature or mod that would show lights on a planet depending on how populated and industrialized it is, having a visual representation of your progress would feel amazing and would give a real sense of accomplishment as you see great settlements rotate into the night.
Im not totally sure how it would be triggered in this game but it could be done by either layering different transparent pngs over each other or having different ones for each level. Ideally there would be a different design for each planet so that you dont get cities in the middle of an ocean but that would add a whole lot more work to the project.
I was thinking at level 9 and ten you would start to see trans-oceanic highways and possibly settlement starting to form in more extreme areas like said ocean. Not like Holy Terra kind of population but just little spots here and there.

If you have any ideas or comments i can add them here in an edit.

Why is this in suggestions?
Because he was making an abstract question to make the suggestion that Nerexelin should modify this feature in they way he said. AKA he was suggesting to make it harder to take a planet.

I doubt that would be effective, it would be like the Talibans vs USA time 10.
This isn't like invading an uncivilized land or unprepared land, we're talking about a massive fortress world. They would have stockpiles of arms as well as food. And my point was in order to take a planet you eventually have to get boots on the ground, jets tanks and nukes cant hold a city, and you cant just bombard the area at this point because your own men are there as well. And it takes half the time for them to send out some expeditionary forces as it does for you to deploy troops. And they would be able to arm and organize militia groups. It would be almost exactly like Vietnam where US troops could bomb an area all they want but eventually they would have to send in troops, and in the time to do so the Vietnamese would know exactly where the troops were going to land, and even though the US troops had assault rifles and vulcan cannons they would still get massacred by farmers with AKs and bolt action rifles before they run away again.
Like this scenario the only option to deal with someone this fortified is to starve them out, but in Nam the US couldn't do this because it was China supporting the Vietnamese and they couldn't risk war with China so it just became a meat grinder of continuous assault and counter assault.

you are hitting their military infrastructure with antimatter bombs.

That could be apart of the seizing, you can do that all in one day without some super massive fleet and COMPLETE spacial supremacy. And i assumed heavy batteries would be capable of disrupting bombardment to at least some degree. You could see this in late WW2, even with complete air superiority the Allies weren't able to just bomb the Germans into submission due to anti air fire and bunkers. And regardless of how powerful anti matter bombs are(within reason) if you dig deep enough you can still hide from nukes pretty well, even terranean penetrates can only reach so far, it hits a point where you will have to either  spend blood taking their bunkers full of kill box after kill box, or you have complete control of the area and you have to bore a hole down and drop a nuke inside. A defensive war isn't that reliant on tanks and airplanes, just men and ditches.
And even if you nuke a planet into glass(which you wouldn't, you want the planet) you do eventually have to send troops down to take the land, and in that time frame the bunkers can send out skirmishers like Vietnam to conduct gorilla warfare and raids to disrupt you and make completely taking the planet impossible, even worse due to them being directed and organised by these bunkers.
This leaves the only real option with a planet this fortified to go Warhammer and Exterminatus the thing, or to completely cut off their food and supply in a months(or years) long operation.

And if you think "its antimatter, just send down a big enough bomb that the multi KM deep bunkers go poof", you cant. There is a point where your bombs or bombing will kick up so much dirt that you will plunge the planet into an ice age and make it useless. Or make it so hot that you cant live there. (i know this is starsector and you can somehow colonize the surface of a gas giant, but i can only suspend disbelief to a degree. And besides, some in depth conquest mechanics would be fun... god i wish they would change how colonizing gas giants is described...)

High Command, Heavy Batteries, Planetary Shield, and a Star Fortress all with Alpha Cores (except the Star Fortress) on a size 8 colony (with +5 increased preparedness). gives me 89735 defensive strength.  At that level I don't think anything is getting through.

I wasn't necessarily thinking actual fleet strength, but more so some mechanic that would give you and the defender a number taking into account ship types, your crew, marine and mech count, their defenses and their debufs.
Also ya, if a planet has all of that you should not be able to do a head on assault without some UN GODLY force and shedding as much blood as a 40k siege. Like 1 man per square meter kind of casualties going on. For a planet like that you should have to seige them for months and basically starve them out, or at least give them so many fighting and maintenance debuffs from lack of supply that they are throwing rocks from the top of their walls.

i mostly agree, taking a planet should be quite hard depending on how "dug in" the enemy is as well as you should usually need to siege the planet for weeks for best results, like bombarding and raiding their industry to starve and destabilize them.

Side note:
As is i don't think heavy batteries are all that good, all they do is script the AI pirates and Luddic path from raiding you all the time, they are actually pretty trash at defending an actual attack, kinda like armor i think things like this should have a damage threshold you need to pass before doing any damage, but once you do 75% of the damage to get through is added back onto any overflow damage. AKA if you are strong enough to bust the armor you go right through, it goes right from almost no damage to tonnes.

this topic is just getting hilarious

Now, admittedly, I don't see it myself. Mainly I notice the Autopulse laser

Now, i dont see it for that one, i just imminently think of this
