General Discussion / Re: 0.95a is Here!
« on: March 26, 2021, 06:58:33 PM »
I got home from work and decided to check this forum randomly. I have checked once a week or so since late last year for a new version lol. Glad it's here! Now to find time to actually play it since my backlog is full atm since I got a PS5 a week ago, and X4 had a big DLC with a new patch lol. Brain overload. Thanks for the hard work Alex and team!

Nice interview! Though, I don't agree with some of his opinion about Steam. I love achievements in games, as they give me goals to work for when I run out of ideas in a game. Which adds more playability. Just my opinion!

General Discussion / Re: Is it OK to make the mod about EVE?
« on: January 05, 2020, 03:42:18 PM »
That's a bit excessive honestly. Disney is not going to come in here and slap a person with a law suit just because they make a Star Wars mod for Star Sector, nor would any other IP/studio. Now you may end up with a cease and desist, but that just means you have to delete your work and stop what your doing. As long as you follow that and stop you wont get in any trouble. The odds of even getting that are slim as well unless your mod gets super popular, but games like Stellaris have Star Wars mods that are very popular and do just fine.

General Discussion / Re: Max Computer Specs

Well now I'm a bit confused myself, tbh. On the one hand, I know for sure that AMD OpenGL drivers are bad. On the other hand, even with the graphics mods enabled I don't seem to be bottlenecking at the GPU, it seems to be pCPU. (I thought Alex had said things are usually GPU bound, but I can't find the quote so uh maybe I imagined it.)

Stock Ryzen 1600's aren't blazing fast by any means on single core, but I'm also able to play pretty large battles comfortably so * shrug *. So honestly, while Nvidia OpenGL is miles ahead, I don't think it really matters for this game. Now for other OpenGL titles it might.

Yea something to consider anyways, but I have plenty of time to think about it. Testing this game it runs at 60-59fps on 500 battle size. I can run games like Doom just fine on Ultra though, but I think I used Vulkan. I play old Halflife games which I know are opengl fine. Honestly I can't think of many games any more that use openGL only. I would think I would be fine upgrading to the 5700XT since this runs on the 480. Honestly all games that used opengl have switched over to Vulkan, and i'd love it if Starsector added that support as well :D. I know it wont at this point, but it would future-proof this game.

I can confirm that the RX 580 is extremely poor at Starsector considering its nominal power. A few years ago I upgraded my rig to it and it was no benefit despite being about 6 years newer than the card it was replacing. For contrast, I started playing SS on a mobo integrated GPU and it ran just fine (must have had decent openGL support).

Strange I play just fine on my RX 480 8gb card. It's 3 years old now, but I am about to upgrade to the RX 5700 XT in 2 month's(income tax). Is that a bad idea for this game? It shows it's 70+% faster than my 480 on benchmarks. Granted I run this 480 with a I5-7600k. I plan to get a Ryzen 5 or 7 as well. I keep seeing "AMD cant do openGL," but my AMD card seems to run every game I throw at it just fine including Starsector. It has only recently started to only be able to do "high" to "medium" settings on most newer games. I also have had zero issues with my drivers over the last few years(switched from Nvidia). The 2070 super is $100 more for only a very small fps gain in benchmarks.

General Discussion / Re: How to get crew?
« on: August 21, 2019, 10:54:05 PM »
I figured it out, thanks! I was not buying enough crew, and could not figure out where it showed how much I needed. I kept checking the fleet window instead of the store.

General Discussion / How to get crew?
« on: August 20, 2019, 08:32:04 AM »
So I'm a noob obviously, and cannot figure out how to fix the "undercrewed" message in red on all my ships on the fleet screen. I got a bunch of new ships salvaging for a mission, but when I went to fight my combat readiness was really low. Checking the fleet screen it shows that message about crew. I went to a port to hire new crew, and drug a bunch over to my inventory, but they all still show that message? How do I get crew for my ships and assign them to a ship? I am probably missing something obvious lol.

General Discussion / Re: The new skill system
« on: August 12, 2019, 04:59:53 PM »
Without reading the replies I totally agree with the OP. I am only a few days in on playing as well, and I actually like the level system the way it is at the moment. The first thing I noticed was how customizable it is and that adds to replay ability. I hope the new system is designed in a way I can still level up in any way I want to and focus on various things with one character. It also seems odd to only have 15 levels in a game like this..

General Discussion / Re: Any solution for UI scaling?
« on: August 11, 2019, 06:58:06 PM »
So I am using a 1080p monitor and just bought this. The text is very small on my monitor even at 1080p sadly. If I lower it to 1600x900 as suggested it actually causes a big fps drop to 30 from 60 for some strange reason? It also looks quite a bit worse, which was to be expected I guess lowering resolution. Better scaling would be very great to have at some point. I can play at 1080, but I have to strain my eyes to see some of it or lean forward in my chair(or maybe it's just the font style). I am even wearing my glasses lol.

General Discussion / Re: Why is developer stalling steam release?
« on: August 11, 2019, 06:43:36 PM »
I agree that Steam would bring lots of sales, but from what I can see, the devs are able to (for now) live off the sales, so no need to rush publishing this game and risking getting bad reviews from people who are not very understanding.

That said, if Alex (or whomever would be in charge of this decision) decides to publish it to steam, I expect a GOG release too!

Personally, I will keep using the DRM-less version,
why would I ever choose the steam ver over this one? 30% higher cost (or 30% developer revenue loss) and I would be at the mercy of some automated system to let me play my games.

Personally I enjoy all of the Steam features, but I just run the game as a "non-steam game" for now. Adding in achievements and the like would only benefit the game as well as showing my hours played, friends lists, etc, etc. I have used solely steam for gaming since it launched(besides Blizzard games), and don't regret it at all nor have I had any troubles. In fact this is the first game I have bought outside of Steam since the last WoW expansion, and before that Rimworld years ago.

I found this game from Steam on the X4 forums actually, but then I read about this guys review and watched it and it sold me on buying it just now :D. I wanted to wait for a Steam release, and I can't remember the last game I bought that was not on Steam(probably WoW). I rarely buy things not on Steam PC related, but I caved in here and glad I did. You know your making a great game to get me to buy it lol. Hopefully we can get a key when it comes out on Steam eventually(if it does).
